A method for controlling and regulating a transmission brake of an automatic transmission designed as a gear reduction unit in which the rotation speed of a countershaft of the gearbox can be decelerated in an upshift such that it corresponds to the synchronized rotation speed or comes close to it up to a predetermined distance during an upshift operation. The brake gradient of the countershaft rotation speed or the gear input rotation speed as well as the gear output shaft rotation speed is taken into consideration for the control and regulation of the gearbox brake. To improve the upshifts, operations it is provided that for the control and the regulation of the gearbox brake, in addition, the gradient of the gear output shaft rotation speed is analyzed.

A method for establishing malfunctions of components of a motor vehicle power train as well as the reaction to the same. The power train has a drive motor and an automatic transmission with respectively allocated control devices, setting apparatus and sensors, and the transmission input shaft is allocated a torque sensor for recording the transmission input shaft. During operation of the motor vehicle, the functions of the control devices, the operating elements, the sensors and their data transmission apparatus as well as the measured values of the transmission input torque are recorded and checked for signs of malfunction. After recognizing such a malfunction, operations are conducted by means of which the motor vehicle can be further operated in an emergency type of operation or with the aid of which the driving operation can be safely ended.

The transmission brake also carries out additional functions. These functions require no, or only minimal, additional hardware complexity in a cost-neutral way, but considerably increase the functional and practical value of the transmission brake. The comfort and speed of shifting operations, the protection, or as the case may be the detection of error states in sensors, clutch, main clutch, and motor control are improved, and undesirable transmission states avoided. It is also possible to account for and influence other conditions, such as the operation of ancillary devices.

The invention concerns a process for operating an automatically actuated friction clutch and/or a transmission within the drive train, in which a torque sensor is assigned to the input shaft of the transmission. In order to improve the operation of such a drive train, it is provided according to the invention that the curve of the measured transmission input torque is determined and evaluated in order to determine the load properties of the friction clutch and/or the transmission.
