    摘要: An optical stack (400) having a plurality of alternating polymeric layers (401, 402) is described. The alternating layers may be alternating birefringent (syndiotactic polystyrene, sPS) and isotropic (CoPENa) layers, or alternating positively and negatively birefringent layers. Birefringent layers are made using polymers which form optically symmetrical crystallites upon stretching of the polymer. The optical stack has a large refractive index difference in the x-direction (the stretching direction) and small refractive index differences in the y- and z-directions (the non-stretching directions). The optical stack can be made using standard film tentering methods and may be a multilayer reflective polarizer.

    摘要: A film construction (610) includes a group of microlayers that reflect normally incident light polarized along a first axis more than normally incident light polarized along a second axis. The microlayers are arranged into optical repeat units (ORUs) that have a layer thickness distribution along a thickness axis perpendicular to the first and second axes that provides the group of microlayers with an intermediate reflectivity over an extended reflection band for a given incidence condition. The ORUs include thinner ORUs whose thicknesses are less than an average thickness, and thicker ORUs whose thicknesses are greater than the average thickness. The group of microlayers is optically immersed in a medium having a refractive index greater than air, such that “supercritical light” can propagate through the microlayers. The microlayers are oriented such that, on average, the thinner ORUs are closer than the thicker ORUs to an output surface of the construction. By “supercritical light” is meant that travels through the film at an angle that is more oblique than can be achieved by illumination from air using a flat, smooth air/film interface.

    摘要: A reflector laminate, and backlights and displays incorporating such reflector laminates are disclosed. The reflector laminate includes a substrate and a reflector that are adhered together by a plurality of adhesive protrusions. The adhesive protrusions provide for a plurality of voids between the reflector and the substrate, so that a free reflector surface is adjacent to an air gap between the reflector and substrate. The reflector can include a multilayer interference reflector, and the presence of the air gap ensures high reflectivity for the laminate. The reflector can be adhered to a solid lightguide, a frame enclosing a portion of a backlight, a frame enclosing a hollow lightguide cavity, or an optical sheet positioned at the output surface of a backlight.
