A method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium such as for a magnetic disc, in which a magnetic layer comprising a Co-based alloy is formed on a carbon substrate and a heat treatment is applied at a temperature of 250.degree. to 1450.degree. C. to improve the coercive force. Further, the squareness ratio is improved by applying the heat treatment under a magnetic field. Greater coercive force can be obtained by forming a Cr underlayer prior to the formation of the magnetic layer. Increased recording density of the magnetic recording medium can be realized by improving the coercive force and the squareness ratio in this way.

A texture treatment for a carbon substrate of a magnetic disk or for a carbon overcoat layer of a magnetic disk is effective to prevent the generation of a stiction phenomenon between a magnetic head and the surface of a magnetic disk. The texture treatment for a carbon substrate or carbon overcoat of a magnetic disk involves the steps of: preparing the carbon disk surface; forming a catalytic material layer on the surface; and performing a heat treatment of the disks in an oxidizing atmosphere. Preferably, islands of catalytic material are formed on the surface by sputtering, and a laser heat treatment is used in an oxidizing atmosphere.

A hydrogen sensor which may be employed in an overcharge/overdischarge detector for a battery and a hydrogen leakage detector for a fuel cell is provided. The hydrogen sensor includes a sensor element and a diffused resistor member. The gas to be measured passes through the diffused resistor member and reaches the sensor element. The sensor element outputs a signal indicative of the concentration of hydrogen contained in the gas as a function of a decrease in concentration of oxygen contained in the gas arising from reaction of the hydrogen on the oxygen. The diffused resistor member is so designed that speeds of diffusion of the hydrogen and the oxygen when passing through the diffused resistor member are different from each other for increasing the sensitivity of measurement of the concentration of hydrogen.

The inner pipe has an inner bottom portion having an inner bottom hole and an inner side portion having plural inner side holes disposed not to overlap the outer side holes. A spacing D of 0.2-1.0 mm is formed between the outer bottom portion and the inner bottom portion. As a result, flow resistance in the spacing D is relatively high, and the sample gas sufficiently and more smoothly flows toward the gas sensing element. Therefore, the element cover prevents condensed water from entering the inside of the gas sensor and improves response of the gas sensor.
