The present invention provides pickling agent for the chemical conversion coating of a heat exchanger which comprises an acidic aqueous solution containing nitric acid and/or sulfuric acid and at least one metal and/or metal oxoanion salt derived from any metal selected from the group consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and cerium.

A surface treatment agent composition which contains aluminum as the coating film formation component and exhibits excellent properties for removing tin ions within a treatment bath when subjecting a tin-plated steel to electrolytic surface treatment, thereby forming a coating film exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance and yellowing resistance. This surface treatment agent composition is used for subjecting a tin-plated steel or a tin-based alloy-plated steel to electrolytic surface treatment and contains aluminum ions, fluorine ions, and polycarboxylic acid. The tin ions that eluted from the tin-plated steel are precipitated within and removed from the treatment bath by using this surface treatment agent composition.

This composition includes a particle of a phosphate of a bivalent or trivalent metal and has a pH value ranging from 3 to 12. The particle has a D50 value of 3 μm or less. The hydrophilic surface-treating aqueous solution contains as main components polyglutamic acid, basic compound, and aqueous resin if necessary. This surface-treating solution and method enable the forming of a film on the surface of aluminum series metals which are used for aluminum fins of heat exchangers, and confer the film's anticorrosion properties, superior hydrophilicity and high hydrophilic permanency, while remarkably suppressing an offensive odor.

A method for surface treating a heat exchanger, a hydrophilizing treatment agent used in this method, and an aluminum heat exchanger obtained from this method are provided that excel in the initial adherence, hydrophilicity, and odor suppressibility, and can maintain these abilities for an extended time, while having little burden on the environment and the human body. The method for surface treating an aluminum heat exchanger that is brazed includes (1) a pickling treatment step; (2) a chemical conversion treatment step; and (3) a hydrophilization treatment step, in which the acidic cleaning agent contains nitric acid and sulfuric acid and contains ferric salt in a predetermined amount, the hydrophilizing treatment agent contains silica grains coated with a vinyl alcohol polymer and a polyallylamine resin.
