A method for setting the torque in an internal combustion engine determines a set air mass and a corresponding throttle valve setting from a set torque in a control tract. An actual air mass allows the difference between a set air mass and the actual air mass to be determined by comparing a set value and the actual value. The controlling effort for setting a desired torque will be reduced. A correction value for the difference between the actual and set values of the air mass is calculated whereby an adaptation of the control tract to the difference is performed. Thereby, in the control tract, a correspondingly adapted throttle valve position will then be associated with a set torque that is to be established. A compensation of the previously determined difference between the set value and the actual value of the air mass is produced. An actual fuel mass fed to the combustion chambers can be utilized for determining the actual air mass, as can a fuel/air mass ratio of a mixture fed to the combustion chambers.

The invention provides for a method and device for determining a gas pressure and temperature in a hollow space, including a fuel/air mix in an internal combustion engine combustion chamber. According to the invention, pressure and temperature are detected by means of a measuring element (5) of an ultrasound transducer/pressure sensor combined unit, said measuring element acting both as a pressure measuring element and an ultrasound transducer element to determine temperature. Therefor, said measuring element can be operated at given moments, on one hand as a pressure measuring element and on the other hand as an ultrasound transducer element or continuously, as a pressure measuring element, and furthermore as an ultra-sound transducer element superimposed with the latter. In that case, it is provided that signals should be conveniently separated for the measuring element output signal. The invention can be used, for instance, to determine air volumes for car internal combustion engines.

The engine speed is fed to a Kalman filter as an input value and at least one of the three variables intake manifold pressure, throttle-valve air mass flow rate and throttle valve angle is fed as a variable measured by the respective sensor. The Kalman filter derives estimated values for the variables intake manifold pressure and throttle-valve air mass flow rate, with which the air mass flowing into a respective cylinder of the engine per working cycle is determined.
