A fibrous structure having a roughened surface and a process for producing the same are disclosed. Upon dying, the fibrous structure is greatly improved in color depth. In addition, it gives one a more scrooping feeling than silk does.The fibrous structure has surface irregularities whose structure is such that the distance between the adjacent projections is 0.01 to 0.7 micrometer and the area of the concave portions is 0.1 to 0.8 square micrometer in 1 square micrometer of the irregularities.The fibrous structure is produced by the steps of attaching fine particles to the fiber surface in an amount of 0.001 to 10 wt % based on the fiber, said fine particles having an average primary particle diameter smaller than 0.5 micrometer and being more inert than the fiber-constituting polymer base material to low-temperature plasma, and subjecting the fiber, to which said fine particles have been attached, to low-temperature plasma, thereby forming projections which are larger than the average primary particle diameter.

A surface-modified synthetic fiber is provided by plasma irradiating a synthetic fiber containing fine particles. Recesses and projections are formed on the surface of the fiber. The recesses are formed by being etched with plasma in the portion not shielded by the fine particles; the projections are formed by not being etched in the portion shielded by the fine particles. The resulting fiber has an irregular surface such that the distance between the center points of adjacent projections is between approximately 0.03 and 1 microns and the number of projections is between approximately 1 and 200 per square micron.

Provided is an artificial hair made of a copolyester comprising polyethylene terephthalate copolymerized with an improving compound represented by ##STR1## in an amount of 1 to 8 mol %, which can be headset for giving shapes such as curls or waves at a low temperature causing no migration or sublimation of disperse dyes, the shapes thus given being kept stably.Also provided is a process for producing such artificial hair, which can by employment of specific techniques keep the dry heat shrinkage at 170.degree. C. of the obtained artificial hair below 10%. Then the resulting artificial hair exhibits good operatability of the heatsetting procedure.

Provided is a composite fiber comprising an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a thermoplastic polymer. The composite fiber is acetalized with a dialdehyde such that the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has a melting point in a specified range, whereby the composite fiber does not cause serious stickings between the filaments when dyed, sewn or ironed and is excellent in hydrophilic property, resistance to soiling, antistatic property and the like. The composite fiber is thus very suitable for clothing use.

A plasma treating apparatus for a sheet-like structure which comprises a generally drum-shaped first discharge electrode assembly rigidly mounted on a rotary shaft which extends through a vacuum vessel, the rotary shaft providing rotation to the electrode assembly. The sheet-like structure is adapted to follow the outer periphery of the first discharge electrode assembly. The apparatus further comprises a second discharge electrode assembly disposed within the vacuum chamber so as to confront the first discharge electrode assembly. The vacuum vessel is electrically insulated from an electric circuit which is connected to both of the first and second discharge electrode assemblies. Insulating members are also interposed between a cylindrical body of the drum of the first discharge electrode assembly and the rotary shaft to electrically insulate the first electrode assembly from the rotary shaft.

A sheet-like structure comprises a fibrous structure containing not less than 10 weight percent of disperse dye-polyester fibers. At least one side of the structure is coated with a resin layer. A thin polymer film layer having a thickness of 100-10,000 angstroms is formed on at least one side of the resin layer. The structure is effective in preventing disperse dye migration and sublimation.

Provided is a composite fiber comprising an ethylenevinyl alcohol copolymer (component A) and a polyester (component B) heterogeneously blended with each other. In the cross section of the fiber, component A is distributed in islands form locally, and the region of component B where component A is not present containing a component B zone containing a circular area having a diameter at least 1/20 that of the fiber. By assuming the above structure, the fiber has good bulk, touch and silhouette, and a feeling similar to that of natural fibers, having solved the problems inherent to polyester fibers, such as oil soiling, soil redeposition by washing and soiling by sublimation and migration of disperse dye, while making use of superior features of polyester fiber, such as high strength, modulus, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, weather resistance and dimensional stability.
