A catalyst structure for treating exhaust gas from a lean burn internal combustion engine comprises a substrate monolith comprising a lean NOX catalyst (LNC) composition associated with at least one partial oxidation catalyst (POC), wherein the LNC composition is selected from the group consisting of: (a) silver or a silver compound supported on alumina; and (b) at least one metal selected from the group consisting of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co) and cerium (Ce) supported on at least one zeolite, and wherein the at least one POC is selected from the group consisting of: (i) a bulk oxide, a bulk composite oxide or a bulk mixed oxide comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cerium (Ce) and praseodymium (Pr); and (ii) at least one of rhodium (Rh) and palladium (Pd) disposed on at least one inorganic oxide support.

A method of decomposing nitrogen dioxide to nitrogen monoxide in an exhaust gas of a lean-burn internal combustion engine, such as a diesel engine, comprises adjusting the C1 hydrocarbon:nitrogen oxides (C1 HC:NOx) ratio of the exhaust gas to from 0.1 to 2 and contacting this exhaust gas mixture with a particulate acidic refractory oxide selected from the group consisting of zeolites, tungsten-doped titania, silica-titania, zirconia-titania, gamma-alumina, amorphous silica-alumina and mixtures of any two or more thereof and passing the effluent gas to atmosphere.

The precursor may be converted to a sorbent suitable for removing heavy metals from liquids or gases by applying one or more sulphur compounds to sulphide the copper compound and form CuS.

A catalyst suitable for the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of hydrocarbons comprises at least one first metal and at least one second metal bound to a support material. The at least one first metal comprises at least one transition metal, suitably a platinum group metal. The support material is provided with an overlayer such that acidic sites on the support material are substantially blocked. In a preferred embodiment the catalyst is also substantially chloride free. Method of preparing catalyst are also disclosed.
