    摘要: A two step interfacial polymerization process for encapsulating operative chemically active substances in high quality semipermeable membranes. An emulsion is formed wherein the discontinuous phase contains the substance to be encapsulated and a first monomer. When a second monomer is added to the continuous phase, an imperfect membrane forms about the droplets of the discontinuous phase. Removal of the continuous phase, followed by resuspension of the raw microcapsules and addition of a second portion of second monomer, causes further polymerization strengthening the membranes and "patching" macroporous defects in them. The choice of solvents and control of reaction conditions such as pH, maximize the yield of operable labile substance encapsulated. A method of encapsulating a very high concentration of hemoglobin is also disclosed. Adaption of the two step process provides a method for forming and controlling the pore sizes in the membranes of a number of known prior art encapsulation processes.

    摘要: A pneumatic injection apparatus featuring a fluid actuated drive and control system is disclosed. The apparatus, in its various aspects, has a modular construction so that it may be quickly disassembled, both mechanically and pneumatically, for easy maintenance and repair. Thus, for example, a retention means against which an animal part is placed for injection, is pneumatically connected through a release manifold mechanism to permit the retention means to be pneumatically decoupled from the remainder of the apparatus both quickly and easily. The pneumatic drive system is provided with a shock absorbing system to reduce the forces and stresses to which the various syringe elements of the system are subjected. Additionally, a fluid flow path is provided from a presettable counter to the retention means whereby a gas flow is provided when the preset count has been reached.

    摘要: A flexible shaft transmitting the rotational motion of a motor shaft to a rotor adapter is protected from deformation by a shaft protector which connects the flexible shaft to the motor shaft. The shaft protector is concentric about and completely protects the flexible shaft as it extends from the motor shaft to the rotor adapter. The end of the flexible shaft connected to the rotor adapter and the rotor adapter itself are free to move within the lumen defined by the shaft protector. The shaft protector, however, prevents permanent deformation of the flexible shaft by preventing the flexible shaft from bending to a point at which permanent deformation would occur.In one important embodiment of the invention, a rotor adapter is provided with a plurality of grooves which prevent the rotor from jamming on to the rotor adapter.

    摘要: A coin operated gumball dispensing slide mechanism is disclosed which has a coin slide slidable over a base plate. The coin slide has a gumball dispensing wall, an aperture for passage of a gumball from a reservoir to the gumball dispensing wall, an actuator for moving the coil slide, a shoulder, and a portion defining a coin receiving slot. The coin slide is slidably mounted on a base plate which has a flexibly mounted locking dog for abutting the shoulder and locking the coin slide until a coin inserted into the slot disables the dog. When the coin is in the slot, moving the actuator moves the slide and the gumball is dispensed while the shoulder pushes the coin to a coin receiving aperture in the base plate and while a gate portion of the base plate intrudes on the gumball aperture to prevent gumballs from entering it during operation of the slide.

    摘要: Disclosed is an apparatus for producing capsules of the type which are formed by immersing liquid droplets in a gelling agent. The apparatus comprises a rotor disposed about a central axis of rotation which houses a reservoir for holding the liquid to be formed into capsules, and conduits which lead to ports spaced uniformly on the circumference of a circle. When the rotor is actuated, spheroidal droplets of the capsule-forming material take shape at the ports and are propelled radially outwardly into a gelling agent contained in a reservoir which comprises an annular surface spaced radially apart from the ports.

    摘要: A process for producing microcapsules of controlled porosity containing a chemically active core material. A core material such as a biologically active material and a first monomer in aqueous solution are emulsified in a hydrophobic solvent. A monomer complementary to the first and soluble in the continuous, hydrophobic phase of the emulsion is added to initiate interfacial polymerization about the aqueous droplets. During the course of the reaction, the affinity of the continuous phase for the first monomer is varied by adding a solvent to the continuous phase to vary its polarity. The continuous phase may be relatively nonpolar at the outset and a polar solvent may be added to increase its affinity for the first monomer, or it may be relatively polar at the outset and a nonpolar (or less polar) solvent may be added. This technique allows production of microcapsules having a selected pore size so that, for example, encapsulated material cannot escape, yet lower molecular weight materials can diffuse through the capsule wall.

    摘要: Chemical analysis of a sample with reagents spotted on a fibrous or porous medium employs a medium pretreated both with reagents and with conditioning agent. The conditioning agent increases the degree to which the liquid reactants wet the medium. One form of pretreated medium has different reagents located predominantly within different selected zones.Liquid is applied to the medium, typically as diluted sample, at a rate selected to enhance formation of repeatable spots. In one embodiment the liquid is applied by flowing it onto a wick element seated on the medium. The wick is disc-like and small relative to the spot which the reactants form on the medium. The disc can be pretreated to carry reagent, which the liquid transfers to the medium.The analysis instrument receives a reaction medium between selectively recessed upper and lower surfaces aligned in opposition at the reaction spot being analyzed.The analysis can, depending on the analytical reaction, the medium and the precision required, proceed while the reactants are wet or can measure a reaction product after the reactants are dry. A single point analysis can also be made.

    摘要: In a collapsible kite structure, a snap lock connecting assembly comprising at least two suitably rigid sticks or struts and at least one detachable bracing stick or strut, in combination with a snap lock connecting unit. The snap lock includes a fastening body portion attached to a stiffening stick, such as a wing stick of said kite, and a resilient, flexible, hollow retainer body portion configured to securely receive and resiliently hold an end part of a bracing strut. The retainer body portion of the snap lock has a longitudinal slot through the side thereof for forced passage therethrough of an end part of the bracing stick whereby the end of the bracing strut may be detachably retained in a secure position within said hollow retainer body. In a preferred embodiment the retainer body portion of the snap lock has a bead or other interengaging structure to enhance the secure retention of the end of the detachable bracing stick within the retainer body.
