The invention is for use in gas chemistry for producing hydrogen-containing gas on the base of a CO and H2 mixture (syngas) from natural gas and other hydrocarbon gases. The object of the invention is to suppress side reactions resulting in soot formation when conducting the process in high productivity mode, and also to provide for an uncomplicated reactor design while maintaining compact dimensions thereof. The method for producing a hydrogen-containing gas comprises mixing natural gas with oxygen, partially oxidizing the natural gas with oxygen at a temperature ranging from 1300° C. to 1700° C. resulting in obtaining hydrogen-containing gas, and cooling the stream of the hydrogen-containing gas produced. Said cooling is performed until the temperature drops below 550° C. and at a rate above 100000° C./sec. The reactor comprises the following steps, which are arranged in series along the technological process: means for supplying natural gas and oxygen, a natural gas and oxygen mixing zone, a zone for conducting the reaction by partially oxidizing the natural gas with oxygen, and a zone for cooling the stream of the hydrogen-containing gas produced, which is equipped with a cooling body of revolution in order to provide an intensive cooling of the stream of hydrogen-containing gas by contacting thereof with said body of revolution.

A passivation species may be continuously or intermittently applied to an inlet of the instrument while a sample gas stream is being applied. The passivation species may have a highly polar functional group that strongly binds to either water or polar groups of the interfaces, and once bound presents a non-polar group to the gas phase in order to prevent further binding of polar molecules. The instrument may be actively used to detect the sticky molecules while the passivation species is being applied.

The rubber layer (6) is lined internally with large slabs (10a, 10b) of a natural rock of volcanic origin, which has a total SiO.sub.2 and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 content greater than 60%, a porosity of between 6 and 30% and a relative density of less than 3. At most three slabs (10b) are placed side by side along the width of the tank and at most one slab (10a) is placed along its height. The minimum dimensions of a slab (10a or 10b) are 0.50.times.0.50 meter.The invention is applicable in particular to the pickling of strips of hot-rolled metal sheets.

High quality carbon nanochains or carbon nanotubes are produced by methods that include mixing a carbon-containing feedstock with a catalyst to form a feedstock/catalyst mixture, or coating a catalyst with a carbon-containing feedstock, and subjecting the feedstock/catalyst mixture or feedstock-coated catalyst to irradiation with a laser to convert the feedstock into carbon nanochains or carbon nanotubes in the presence of the catalyst. In some instances, the feedstock is converted to a char by pyrolysis and the char is instead subjected to laser irradiation. The carbon-containing feedstock can be a biomass or a carbonaceous material. In some instances, the catalyst is a metal salt, preferably a transition metal salt. In some instances, the catalyst is an elemental metal, an alloy, or a combination thereof.
