    摘要: A process is provided for seam welding advanced high strength steel sheets together. Respective end portions of first and second advanced high strength steel sheets are placed in overlapping contact with one another, and subjected to first and second weld passes. In the first weld pass, a seam welder including weld electrodes operate at a first-pass applied current and a first-pass pressure and are moved relative to the overlapping end portions at a first-pass carriage speed to establish a weld seam containing a weld nugget with a martensite phase. In the second weld pass, the weld electrodes operate at a second-pass applied current and a second-pass pressure and move relative to the weld seam at a second-pass carriage speed selected to fuse microcracks, lap openings, and porosity in the seam, relieve the residual stress in the joint, and temper the martensite phase of the weld nugget, and thereby form a weld joint.

    摘要: An exemplary method of making a piston assembly may include providing a piston crown defining at least in part an upper combustion bowl surface. The piston crown includes at least one crown mating surface. The method further comprising moving the crown mating surface in proximity to a skirt mating surface defined by a piston skirt, wherein the crown and skirt cooperate to define a cooling gallery extending about a periphery of the crown. The method may further include bonding the crown and skirt together by initiating an electric current along a conductive path between the crown and skirt mating surfaces, the conductive path comprising at least one conductive material extending from the crown mating surface to the skirt mating surface.

    摘要: Mash seam welding process and apparatus, wherein two plate-like workpieces having different thickness values are fed and guided by a guiding device such that a length W.sub.H of contact of the thick plate-like workpiece with one of two roller electrodes is smaller than a length W.sub.M of contact of the thin plate-like workpiece with the other roller electrode. In this arrangement, the amount of mashing of the thick plate-like workpiece by the roller electrode is made larger than that of the thin plate-like workpiece by the other roller electrode, so that an interface of the two plate-like workpieces is positioned intermediate between the pair of roller electrodes, whereby a weld nugget formed intermediate between the roller electrodes extends across the interface, permitting the weld to have a sufficient strength owing to a nugget ratio, which is a ratio of a width dimension W.sub.N of the weld nugget in the direction of the interface to a width dimension W.sub.G of the interface.

    摘要: Apparatus for and method of flash welding the trailing and leading ends of elongated metal strip, particularly where the strip is in coil form. The flash welder may be of standard construction with the exception that a shear is built into the welder and disposed downstream of the welding clamps, and a strip indexing means is disposed downstream of the shear. Strip from one coil is fed through the welder without obstruction. When the supply on this coil is near exhaustion, further movement of the strip is arrested and the shear is operated to sever the strip. The tail portion of the severed strip is withdrawn from the welder and when such portion clears the welding clamps, a gauge bar is disposed between the clamps while the main portion of the severed strip is moved in an upstream direction by the indexing means so that its sheared end abuts against one side of the gauge bar. Strip from the other coil is fed into the welder until its leading end abuts the opposite side of the gauge bar. The welding clamps are then closed on the strips, the gauge bar is withdrawn, and a normal flash welding operation takes place.

    摘要: An apparatus for producing a butt weld between two pieces of longitudinally aligned material through the agency of supplying a first piece of material to one side of a stop member, whereupon it is rigidly retained by a stationary first clamping means. A second piece of material is fed to another side of the stop member, where it is rigidly retained by a movable second clamping means. The stop member is then withdrawn and a slide member, propelled by a cam actuated linkage assembly and affixed to the second clamping means, moves this means with the second piece intact toward the first piece of material, until the two pieces contact. Current is then supplied to the two pieces to effect a butt weld whereafter both clamping means release their grip on the respective pieces, allowing an extractor to move forward and eject the welded article.
