Abstract: A method of making a high-end precision gun frame is disclosed. The method includes the steps of providing first and second blanks; machining the first blank to form a left-hand open-face half frame; machining the second blank to form a right-hand open-face half frame complementary and substantially symmetrical to the left-hand half frame; aligning/positioning the left-hand half frame and right-hand half frame such that they confront each other; and high energy beam welding the left-hand open-face half frame and the right-hand open-face half frame together selectively along their interface to form the gun frame. The invention enables the low-cost manufacturing of high-end precision guns of exacting specifications with extremely tight tolerances.

Abstract: A bonding probe is used for bonding a cover sheet to a core to form or repair a dual wall structure. The bonding probe includes a body, an attachment end at a distal end of the body, a head at an opposite end of the body, a tip extending from the head, and a cooling passageway. The attachment end couples the body to a resistance welder. The tip extends to form a proximate end of the body. The tip includes a contacting area having a predetermined three dimensional contoured surface. The contacting area aligns with a predetermined area of a three dimensional outer surface of a cover sheet of a dual walled structure. The cooling passageway provides a passageway for a flow of cooling fluid. The cooling passageway extends through the head, and into the tip.

Abstract: Drill collars may be constructed using solid-state welding processes. Solid-state welding produces robust drill collars with high fatigue lifespans and permits individual segments of the drill collar to be optimized based on their intended use. A drill collar may be formed of a first segment with a different material, density, modulus of elasticity and/or geometry than an adjacent second segment fused thereto. If a segment of a drill collar is damaged in use, the damaged segment may be removed and replaced, possibly without de-rating the drill collar. Methods of forming the solid-state welds may include friction welding adjacent segments to one another such that features in each segment are circumferentially aligned when the weld is formed. Supplemental energy sources may provide additional heat at the welded surfaces to ensure the segments are effectively fused.

Abstract: A baffled optical waveguide has a body shaped to partially or wholly surround a part or parts being processed by being illuminated with light. The body has optical baffles therein that define light channels through which the light travels as it transits the baffled optical waveguide. Outlets of the light channels are adjacent an opening in the body which receives an area or areas of the parts or parts being processed. Each light channel homogenizes the light as it transits through that light channel. The optical baffles that define the light channels keep light from diverging in the baffled optical waveguide as it transits through the light channels. In an aspect, a part (or parts) is processed by illuminating it with light via the baffled optical waveguide.
