A process for the continuous preparation of non-expanded honeycomb core from non-precorrugated web involves the progressive corrugation and consolidation of web by a corrugating/consolidating unit containing corrugating and consolidating elongate teeth which traverses a bed unit containing sets of former bars, forming a half cell height of honeycomb at each pass. A plurality of node-antinode demes of the topmost half cell layer being formed are consolidated while new corrugations and associated node-antinode demes are being formed. The process allows for more lengthy consolidation time, a smaller temperature differential between consolidating teeth and the node-antinode demes being consolidated, and further allows the corrugating and consolidation temperatures to be substantially independent of each other. The process may be implemented through use of a corrugating/consolidation unit having a travelling belt containing corrugating and/or consolidating teeth which may be individually and selectively heated. The process and apparatus allows production of honeycomb even from thin thermoplastic web materials at high production rates. In a preferred embodiment, the teeth are radiant energy transmissive teeth associated with a source of radiant energy directed through the teeth toward the bottom, node-antinode contacting face.

A method and apparatus for fusing and shaping the end of a rope, cord or the like made of heat fusible fibers avoiding the enlarged or bulbous end which normally occurs when heated in a conventional manner. The method involves inserting the cut end of a rope into a cavity of a member wherein the cavity tapers inwardly in a direction from an open end thereof to a closed bottom end, heating the member to melt the end of the rope thereby fusing together the strands and cooling the heated end of the rope to set the fused ends and shape the same to the internal shape of the cavity. The apparatus is a thin-walled, metallic member conically shaped and located at the end of a handle. A flared sleeve is also provided in which the end of the rope to be fused is inserted to compress the strands together before being heated. The conical member maybe heated by a butane torch or the like or alternatively, an electric resistance heating element maybe incorporated in a stem projecting from the handle.

A method and apparatus for welding PVC pipe which includes a means to clamp and apply welding heat so that plastic pipes may be welded while under external pressure adapted to offset internal pressures. The method includes the steps of placing a clamp about a splice to be welded, tightening the clamp and applying heat through the clamp to the plastic in sufficient quantities to cause the plastic to fuse. The steps are carried out by utilizing an apparatus comprised of a clamp which is adapted to encompass the area to be welded and apply a constricting force to that area while heat is transferred through the clamping means to the plastic.

A method for splicing together first and second webs in end-to-end relationship comprising the steps of (a) providing at least one hold through each web; (b) juxtaposing said webs end-to-end; (c) positioning two splicing patches comprising thermoplastic material on opposite surfaces of said webs and overlying end portions of both webs and said holes therein; (d) passing through both of said patches and each of said holes a hot pin to soften and merge together in each hole softened plastic from said patches. A plurality of joinders can be preformed in this way simultaneously. A joinder can also be provided in the space between the ends of the webs. The initial holes in the webs can be pierced by the hot pin prior to splicing. the apparatus for performing the method includes a first plate having a first hole therein adapted to support the webs and patches, a second plate having a second hole therein aligned with the first hole, a pin movable axially through the two holes, and means for heating the pin. The second plate has an annular boss on the periphery of its hole to force the patch into the second hold slightly before penetration by the heated pin. The two spliced webs as an article of manufacture are also within the invention.
