    摘要: A long plastic film roll is manufactured in situ for covering an agricultural, athletic or other field. A plurality of short plastic film rolls are supported on drivable rollers, which in turn are mounted on a plurality of spaced trucks extending along the width of the field. The axes of the film rolls are parallel, but alternate rolls are staggered with every other roll being disposed either forwardly or rearwardly of the adjacent rolls. The roll ends overlap and, as the trucks move longitudinally down the field to lay down the film, the overlapping edges of the film are sealingly joined together as they leave their respective rolls and just before being laid down.

    摘要: A device for welding plastic materials includes a handheld, wand-type applicator that dispenses a focused stream of oxygen-free air for optimum fusion. The applicator comprises a heating coil that warms the dispensed air to a sufficient temperature to sufficiently meld the plastic materials. A weld air delivery system delivers the supply of oxygen-free air to the weld applicator. A separate coolant air delivery system includes a tank that collects a reserve supply of ambient air that is used to cool the heating coil when applicator is not actively welding plastic materials. The inclusion of separate delivery systems ensures that ambient air is used to cool applicator, whereas oxygen-free air is preserved for use in welding applications. For safety purposes, a switch deactivates the heating coil when the pressure of the reserve air in the tank falls beneath a predefined threshold that is considered necessary to adequately cool the applicator.

    摘要: Induction heating of thermoplastic composite materials is accomplished to form a continuous bonded joint. A zone of optimum heating can be created by an induction heating coil mounted within and adjacent to the drum of a hollow circular roller of non-conductive material (i.e., transparent to the RF field) so that an induction heating field can be created and localized to create a zone of optimum heating at the joint area of the material to be bonded. Simultaneously pressure to that area can be applied by the circular roller. In a preferred form, the roller is semi-rigid to permit spreading of the contact surface with the joint area to avoid absolute contact line loading. A hand held induction heating unit with a finger operable power switch can be moved in a back and forth manner over the joint to apply heat when the switch is turned on and effect consolidation when the switch is turned off. Using the techniques of the invention, one can fuse two contacting members which are comprised of filamentary reinforced composite materials in which the matrix resin at the joint interface is a member of the thermoplastic family of polymers. The invention concentrates radio frequency (RF) energy at the joint interface which heats the surrounding layers and simultaneously provides for the application of a controlled force normal to the mid-plane of the joint to retain compaction of the laminates which would normally be relieved in a hot unrestrained condition.
