A pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprises a mixture of (a) a non-crosslinking polymer and (b) a cross-linkable copolymer, said cross-linkable copolymer comprising the copolymer of the monomeric units of the polymer (a) and a cross-linkable comonomer. A cross-linkable comonomer is defined as one which when polymerized with one or more other monomers will result in the formation of a polymer containing a pendant reactive group which will self-cross-link. Preferably the composition of the cross-linkable copolymer is very similar to the composition of the non-cross-linking polymer. Cross-linkable monomers specified are N-methylol acrylamide, glycidyl acrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate and the corresponding methacrylic acid derivatives. Exemplified monomers for the non-cross-linking resins are vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, octyl acrylate, vinylidene chloride and copolymers thereof. The composition may be dispersed as an aqueous emulsion, or dissolved in organic solvents and solvent mixtures. Further ingredients such as melamine formaldehde resins and acidic catalysts may be present.ALSO:A pressure-sensitive adhesive tape comprises a flexible backing, such as a polyethylene terephthalate film, coated with a composition comprising a mixture of (a) a non-crosslinking polymer, and (b) a crosslinkable copolymer, said crosslinkable copolymer comprising the copolymer of the monomeric units of the polymer (a) and a crosslinkable comonomer. A crosslinkable monomer is defined as one which when polymerized with one or more other monomers will result in the formation of a polymer containing a pendant reactive group which will self-crosslink. The compositions may also contain melamine formaldehyde resins and acidic catalysts to promote crosslinking. The compositions may be applied to the backing as solutions in organic solvents or as aqueous dispersions.

Adhesives; electric insulation proofing permeable materials; sealing-wax; adhesives.-Polymerized vinyl acetates which are soluble in alcohol and in hydrocarbons such as benzene, are used for cementing and sticking. The products, which may be obtained for example as described in German Specification 446,562, may be used in any condition of viscosity, or molten, or in solution, or as powders. They may be dissolved in organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, esters such as vinyl acetate, acetals, hydrocarbons or halogen derivatives thereof or nitro-hydrocarbon, or mixtures thereof, and the polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of a solvent, for example as described in Specification 261,406, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. Softening agents, adhesive or non-adhesive materials, fillers &c. may be added. Cementing or sticking may be effected with the aid of heat or pressure or both. Examples are given of the use of (1) a solution of the soluble polymerized vinyl acetate in alcohol or benzole &c. for sticking together layers of mica, paper, fibrous material &c. to form electrically insulating materials. (2) a solution of soluble polymerized vinyl acetate to be sprayed, painted &c. on paper, fabric &c. to form sticky films. (3) Powdered soluble polymerized vinyl acetate strewn on layers of materials such as paper or micanite and uniting such layers by pressure and heat. The products may also be used to form sealing-wax to be melted or used cold, and cold glues.
