A lightweight, selectively degradable composite material is disclosed. The composite material comprises a compacted powder mixture of a first powder, the first powder comprising first metal particles comprising Mg, Al, Mn, or Zn, or an alloy of any of the above, or a combination of any of the above, having a first particle oxidation potential, a second powder, the second powder comprising low-density ceramic, glass, cermet, intermetallic, metal, polymer, or inorganic compound second particles, and a third metal powder, the third metal powder comprising third metal particles having an oxidation potential that is different than the first particle oxidation potential. The compacted powder mixture has a microstructure comprising a matrix comprising the first metal particles, the second particles and third particles dispersed within the matrix, the third particles comprising a network of third particles extending throughout the matrix, the composite material having a density of about 3.5 g/cm3 or less.

The sputtering target is formed by the sintering of a powder mixture of the conductive oxide with a sintering agent of an oxide of one of the constituents of the ferroelectric material. For the example of lead-zirconium-titanate (PZT) as the ferroelectric material, the sintering agent is one or more of a lead oxide, a zirconium oxide, and a titanium oxide. The resulting sputtering target is of higher density and lower porosity, resulting in an improved sputter deposited film that does not include an atomic species beyond those of the ferroelectric material deposited adjacent to that film.

Formulations and methods of making solar cell contacts and cells therewith are disclosed. In general, the invention provides a solar cell comprising a contact made from a mixture wherein, prior to firing, the mixture comprises at least one aluminum source, at least one source of a metal including one or more of boron, titanium, nickel, tin, gallium zinc, indium, and copper, and about 0.1 to about 10 wt % of a glass component. Within the mixture, the overall content of aluminum is about 50 wt % to about 85 wt % of the mixture, and the overall combined content of boron, nickel, tin, silver, gallium, zinc, indium, copper, is about 0.05 to about 40 wt % of the mixture.
