An atmospheric pressure ion source, e.g. for a mass spectrometer, that produces ions by atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). It includes a vaporizer, a photon source for photoionizing vapor molecules upon exit from the vaporizer, a passageway for transporting ions to, for example, a mass spectrometer system, and a means for directing the ions into the passageway. The center axis of the vaporizer and the center axis of the passageway form an angle that may be about 90 degrees. Included in the invention is a method for creating ions by atmospheric pressure photoionization along an axis and directing them into a passageway oriented at an angle to that axis.

The replaceable capillary tube is secured at a tip end to a tip of the outer tubular member of the probe assembly by a set screw. The other end of the replaceable capillary tube is sealingly secured by a compression fitting in an adapter connected to the outer tubular member.

A probe adapter for converting a thermospray equipped LC/MS analyzer to an electrospray equipped LC/MS analyzer. The probe adapter includes structure defining an elongated and hollow first chamber opened at one end to atmosphere and closed at the other end by a first partition. Additional structure is provided defining a hole through the first partition and an elongated and hollow probe shaft is connected to and extends from the first partition on a side thereof remote from the opened end. A central axis of the probe shaft is coaxial with a central axis of the first hole. A second partition is provided in the first chamber and is spaced from the first partition and defines a second chamber therebetween. Adjusting structure is provided for selectively adjusting the spacing between the two partitions. A second hole is provided in the second partition and is coaxially aligned with the first hole. An elongated and hollow drift tube is mounted inside the probe shaft, an inlet end of the drift tube extending through the first hole in the first partition and terminating in the second chamber. An outlet end of the drift tube extends a finite distance beyond an end of the probe shaft remote from the first partition. The relative spacing between the first and second partitions determines a spacing between the inlet end of the drift tube and the second hole.

An apparatus for providing an ion vapor to be analyzed. A vaporizer probe, with a capillary tube extending into a vapor port of an ion source, has a release end which ejects a spray of vapor into a spray region of the ion source. Molecules of interest within the vapor may be ions pre-formed in solution or may be ionized by chemical ionization or plasma discharge ionization. A minor portion of the vapor is extracted from the spray chamber for mass analysis. The major portion is coaxially redirected from the spray chamber for return to the same port which receives the capillary tube of the vapor probe. A return tube is vacuum sealed to the port and is in fluid communication with a roughing pump which draws the ion vapor from the spray region through the ion source and the port for coaxial vapor backflow with the capillary tube. The ion source has a split-block structure for ease of both manufacture and routine maintenance.
