An apparatus and method for detecting an analyte of interest using paper spray mass spectrometry includes a spray material; a sample on the spray material including an enzyme of interest; a solvent to hydrate the sample, promote enzymatic activity, and extract analytes of interest from the sample; a substrate specific to the enzyme of interest, wherein any of the spray material and the solvent includes the substrate; a voltage source to apply a voltage to the spray material to create charged droplets of a mixture containing the sample; and a mass spectrometer to perform spectrometry on the droplets to perform any of: identify the analytes of interest in the sample; and measure a level of inhibition in any enzymes contained in the sample.

Disclosed herein is a method for multimodal imaging during a medical procedure using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Raman optical imaging which involves administering an MRI imaging contrast agent that a chemical structure having charge-transfer electronic transitions. The tissue is imaged using and MRI device and the tissue is illuminated with excitation light that has spectral components that are approximately tuned close to one of the charge-transfer electronic transitions thereby producing enhanced Raman optical signals which are analyzed to produce Raman imaging data followed by registering the MRI and Raman imaging data. The present disclosure also provides a method for ionizing laser plumes through atmospheric pressure chemical ionization.

A stream of droplet or charged droplets comprising one or more disulphide (S—S) bonds is directed so as to impact upon a target (106) or electrode so as to cause the breaking of a portion of the disulphide bonds. Alternatively, charged droplets may pass through an electric field region determined by an electrode (106) arranged downstream of a nebuliser or electrospray probe and an ion inlet (104) of a mass spectrometer so as to cause the breaking of a portion of the disulphide bonds.

In the ionizer of the present invention, a stream of gas spouted from a nozzle (18) of a DART ionization unit (10) vaporizes and ionizes the components in a sample (25). Gaseous sample-component molecules which have not been ionized by that process are subsequently ionized by a reaction with a reactant ion produced by a corona discharge generated from a needle electrode (20). Such a two-stage ionization of the sample-component molecules improves the ionization efficiency. A needle-electrode support mechanism (21) adjusts the position and/or angle of the needle electrode (20) and thereby controls a potential gradient. Therefore, a specific sample-derived ion species can be efficiently introduced into an ion introduction tube (31) and be detected with a high level of sensitivity.

The present invention discloses a corona discharge assembly, an ion mobility spectrometer, an computer program and an computer readable storage medium. The corona discharge assembly includes: an ionization discharge chamber, wherein the ionization discharge chamber includes a metal corona cylinder, and the metal corona cylinder is provided with an inlet of a gas to be analyzed and a trumpet-shaped front port which is conductive to forming a gathered electric field; multiple corona pins, in which on-off of a high voltage can be independently controlled, are installed at the center of the metal corona cylinder in an insulating manner. The present invention further discloses an ion mobility spectrometer using the above-mentioned corona discharge assembly. The present invention can be used to prolong the service life of the integral corona discharge assembly; the discharge voltage of the ion source can be reduced and the discharge stability thereof can be improved; in comparison with the suspended installation of a pin-shaped electrode, since the multiple corona pins are fixed on the PCB, during installation, the position of the electrode can be accurate and stable, thus mass manufacture is easier to achieve.
