Abstract: A waveguide assembly integrated with a semiconductor wafer is provided. The waveguide assembly includes a waveguide channel defined by internal walls of the wafer lined with a metallic layer, and having at least one port for transmission of the RF signal into or out of the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly also includes a semiconductor obstacle member disposed in the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly may be fabricated using etching and deposition processes for semiconductor devices. In use, selectively varying either one or both of frequency or power level of electromagnetic radiation applied to the obstacle member varies electrical conductance of the obstacle member, and thereby varies the electrical impedance of the obstacle member to transmission of the RF signal through the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly may be used for switching, attenuating, routing, filtering, and transforming the RF signal.

Abstract: A leaky cable is provided with a linear insulator and a metal layer formed on an outer peripheral surface of the insulator. A slot for leaking electromagnetic waves is formed through the metal layer between an inner peripheral surface and an outer peripheral surface of the metal layer, and the outer peripheral surface of the insulator is formed with unevenness that inhibits misalignment of the slot with respect to the insulator. The method of manufacturing the leaky cable includes forming an insulator composed of thermoplastic resin in a cylindrical shape, roughening an outer peripheral surface of the insulator, forming a metal layer on the outer peripheral surface of the insulator, and forming a slot through the metal layer between an inner peripheral surface and an outer peripheral surface of the metal layer. The slot is configured to leak electromagnetic waves to outside of the metal layer.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a corrugated copper microwave waveguide comprising placing a mandrel with external corrugations in an electrolyte bath substantially devoid of brighteners, accelerators, or levelers and including copper ions, sulfuric acid, chloride, and polyethylene glycol. The mandrel is placed proximate a copper anode in the bath. One or more waveforms are applied to the mandrel and anode to control electrodeposition distribution of copper to the mandrel rather than controlling the electrolyte bath chemistry. The mandrel and the resulting electroformed waveguide are removed from the electrolyte bath and the mandrel is excised (e.g., dissolved) resulting in a microwave waveguide with internal corrugations. Substantially devoid of additives (brighteners, accelerators, and/or levelers) generally means not having to repeatedly meter in additives during the electroforming process.

Abstract: A waveguide device is provided to absorb or dissipate electromagnetic waves. The device comprises an elongated housing having a first end that is a power receiving end and a second end, the housing defining a hollow passage. The device also has an elongated absorber element disposed within the hollow passage of the housing along an interior surface of the housing. The elongated absorber element is configured to absorb at least part of electromagnetic waves traveling through the hollow passage. The device also has a projection extending from the elongated housing into the passage. The projection is configured to exert a resilient force on the absorber element to urge the absorber element against the interior surface of the housing. A method for assembling the waveguide device is also provided.

Abstract: This document describes a single-layer air waveguide antenna integrated on a circuit board. The waveguide guides electromagnetic energy through channels filled with air. It is formed from a single layer of material, such as a sheet of metal, metal-coated plastic, or other material with conductive surfaces that is attached to a circuit board. A portion of a surface of the circuit board is configured as a floor of the channels filled with air. This floor is an electrical interface between the circuit board and the channels filled with air. The single layer of material is positioned atop this electrical interface to define walls and a ceiling of the channels filled with air. The single layer of material can be secured to the circuit board in various ways. The cost of integrating an air waveguide antenna on to a circuit board this way may be less expensive than other waveguide-manufacturing techniques.

Abstract: A vehicle having a communication system is disclosed. The system includes two electrical couplings, coupled by way of a rotary joint having a bearing waveguide. Each electrical coupling includes an interface waveguide configured to couple to external signals. Each electrical coupling also includes a waveguide section configured to propagate electromagnetic signals between the interface waveguide and the bearing waveguide of the rotary joint. Additionally, the rotary joint is configured to allow one electrical coupling to rotate with respect to the other electrical coupling. An axis of rotation of the rotary joint is defined by a center of a portion of the waveguides. Yet further, the rotary joint allows electromagnetic energy to propagate between the waveguides of the electrical couplings.
