This invention pertains, firstly, to the use of mixtures of hydriodic acid and organic solvent soluble iodide salts as catalysts for the hydration of .gamma.,.delta.-epoxyalkenes to form a mixture of the corresponding 2-alkene-1,4-diol and 3-alkene-1,2-diol isomers. Secondly, this invention describes the use of pH to control the 2-alkene-1,4-diol/3-alkene-1,2-diol product ratio, and achieve improved 2-alkene-1,4-diol selectivities by controlling the pH to near neutral values. Thirdly, this invention includes a catalyst recovery process whereby a liquid/liquid extraction is used to separate the product from the catalyst. In this extraction, .gamma.,.delta.-epoxyalkene, or a .gamma.,.delta.-epoxyalkene-containing organic solvent, is used to extract the catalysts from water, leaving the diol products in the aqueous phase, from which they may be subsequently recovered by distillation, extraction or by other means.

An improved process for the hydrolysis of alkylene oxide to produce alkylene glycol which comprises:(a) reacting alkylene oxide and water in the presence of a selectivity-enhancing metalate-containing solid until about 90-95% of the alkylene oxide is converted to alkylene glycol; and(b) completing the hydrolysis reaction of (a) in the absence of the selectivity-enhancing metalate-containing solid.

High selectivity to monoalkylene glycol is obtained by contacting in an associated moiety-forming zone alkylene oxide and a selectivity enhancing, dissociatable metalate anion under conditions sufficient to associate at least a portion of the alkylene oxide with metalate anion, and then contacting the associated moiety with water in a glycol-forming zone to form alkylene glycol. The alkylene glycol can be separated from metalate anion. Desirably, the metalate anion can be recycled to the associated moiety-forming zone.

A process for the preparation of a two-functional-group-containing terpen having the general formula: ##STR1## in which n is an integer of from 1 to 5, R represents a hydroxymethyl, formyl, or carboxyl group, and A represents the hydrogen atom, or a 2-tetrahydropyranyl, benzyl, methoxymethol or methoxyethoxymethyl group comprising the oxidation with a microorganism belonging to the genus Nocardia. Some of the terpenoids are of value as anti-ulcer agents, while others are useful as intermediates.

In the reaction of 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol with aqueous formaldehyde forming isomeric alkene-1,5-diols, particularly 3-methylene-1,5-pentanediol and 3-methyl-2-pentene-1,5-diol, it has been found that yields of the diols surprisingly are substantially increased if the reaction is effected in the presence of added isobutene and the mol ratio of 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol to formaldehyde is at least 1:1.

A process for the hydrogenation of butadienepolyperoxide in a suitable solvent, e.g., tetrahydrofuran, at temperatures of 75.degree.-110.degree. C. and pressure above 2000 psia by contacting the butadienepolyperoxide and hydrogen in the presence of metallic silver. The process produces 1-butene-3,4-diol and 2-butene-1,4-diol.
