A grease composition is produced by mixing a thickener of a calcium sulfonate complex and a second thickener component (polyurea, a metallic soap, a complex metallic soap or an N-substituted terephthalamic acid metal salt) into a base oil. This grease composition is excellent in heat resistance, load carrying capacity, water resistance and lubricating life. Moreover, a grease composition is produced by mixing a thickener of an N-substituted terephthalamic acid metal salt and a second thickener component (polyurea, a metallic soap or a complex metallic soap) into a base oil. This grease composition is excellent in heat resistance, oxidation stability and lubricating life. Furthermore, a grease composition is produced by mixing a thickener of 10 to 90% by mass of polyurea and 90 to 10% by mass of a complex metallic soap into an ester oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40null C. of 20 to 180 mm2/s. This grease composition generates only a few dusts even at a high temperature and has excellent high-temperature performance. Still further, a grease composition is produced by mixing a thickener of 10 to 90% by mass of polyurea and 90 to 10% by mass of a complex metallic soap into a base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 40null C. of 50 to 500 mm2/s. This grease composition has excellent performance under a high-speed and high-temperature environment and provides a rolling apparatus with excellent seizuring life.

The invention relates to a grease composition having a base oil and a thickener that includes hydrophilic metal oxide particles and one or more esters which contain one or more unsaturated C—C bonds and/or at least one OH group. The hydrophilic metal oxide particles have a BET specific surface area of at least 10 m2/g and at least 80% of the hydrophilic metal oxide particles have a particle size in the range of from 5 nm to 900 μm. The amount of the thickener is in the range of from 0.1-40% by weight, based on the total weight of the grease composition. The invention further relates to methods for manufacturing the grease compositions, and the use of the grease compositions for lubricating bearings, gears and couplings.

A synergistic effect on the viscosity behavior of oils is obtained by the addition of a combination of from 0.1% to 10% by weight of a high-melting glyceride of saturated fatty acids (C.sub.14 -C.sub.24) melting above 50.degree. C. (A) and from 0.2% to 10% by weight of a highly dispersed, pyrogenic silica (B), the weight ratio of (A) to (B) amounting to between 20:80 and 80:20. A distinct increase in viscosity may be obtained with relatively small additions of from 0.1% to 1.0% by weight of (A) and from 0.2% to 2% by weight of (B); additions of 1% by weight of (A) and 2% by weight of (B) in a ratio by weight of (A) to (B) of from 25:75 to 50:50 are required to obtain a pasty consistency. Liquid unsaturated triglyceride oils and/or unsaturated fatty acid esters of higher fatty alcohols containing said high-melting glycerides and pyrogenic silica have utility as parting oils for baked goods.

A grease composition comprising base oil and as thickener calcium complex soap and lithium soap is disclosed. A higher fatty acid, an aromatic monocarboxylic acid and a lower fatty acid are used as carboxylic acids constituting the calcium complex soap and lithium soap. The grease composition has a high dropping point and excellent shear stability, and exhibits thermal stability and long bearing life.
