The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 5-(3,4-dimethoxyphenylethyl) methyl-amino-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-isopropyl valeronitrile, which is known as Verapamil. The present invention also relates to a process for improving the purity of verapamil and therefore of its hydrochloride represented as the compound of formula I, by efficient removal of the impurities formed, affording a product of purity greater than 99 %. The process of the present invention is simple, efficient, cost-effective and industrially feasible.

Polymeric leuco colorants are typically comprised of at least two components: at least one leuco chromophore component and at least one polymeric component.

The present invention relates to a process for the cyanation of imines, particularly to the asymmetric cyanation of imines. The Strecker reaction consists of a reaction between an aldehyde and an amine to form an imine, followed by the conversion of the imine to an alpha-amino nitrile by asymmetric catalysis. The present invention relates to a series of vanadium catalysts which allow the reduction of the imine in the Strecker reaction to be performed in good conversion and also with good ee values. The chiral catalysts are of formula (1a) or (1b).

Disclosed is a series of materials, which exhibit large birefringence under the influence of an applied electric field. These materials are capable of switching this large birefringence with a characteristic time on the order of 1 microsecond or less. In addition, these materials have good optical loss at this wavelength, and are stable under irradiation. These materials are suitable for fabrication of optical devices such a variable optical attenuators, switches, and modulators that respond in these time frames or slower. These materials are also suitable for use across a wide range of wavelengths. As a second component of this invention, some of these novel materials exhibit these desired optical properties (large birefringence, low loss, stability under illumination) at wavelengths as short as about 400 nm. These materials are suitable for fabrication of optical devices operating at or about 405 nm, where conventional EO materials strongly absorb and/or quickly degrade.
