The present invention relates to the treatment or prevention of conditions linked to reduced muscle mass or reduced muscle protein synthesis rate. A subject matter of the invention is a composition comprising complexes of whey protein micelles and pectin for use in the treatment or prevention of a condition selected from the group consisting of sarcopenia, muscle atrophy and negative nitrogen balance. Further aspects of the invention relate to the non-therapeutic use of a composition comprising complexes of whey protein micelles and pectin and a food composition.

A powdered composition for the production of an acidified milk beverage, a process for preparing the powdered composition and an acidified milk beverage prepared from the powdered composition. The powdered composition comprises a stabilizer, a milk-based ingredient and a food grade acid, and is in the form of spray dried powders. The process for preparing the powdered composition comprises preparing an aqueous composition containing a milk-based ingredient and a stabilizer; acidifying the aqueous composition with a food grade acid under high shear conditions; and spray drying the acidified solution to powders.

A chewable composition for the oral delivery of live microorganisms is provided. The chewable composition includes a delivery vehicle and an active ingredient incorporated therein. The present invention relates generally to enhanced activity of certain probiotics. The increased efficacy is achieved by using certain substrate components that indirectly supply the probiotics with a specific source of energy. The substrate components are specifically designed to stimulate 1,2-propanediol production. The substrate is exemplified with rhamnose, fucose, pectin with a high percentage of rhamnose, and fucodian having a high percentage of fucose.
