The present invention relates to the use of 6-isopropyl-3,9-dimethyl-1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-2-one, in the form of any one of its isomers or of a mixture thereof, as a perfuming or flavoring ingredient. The present invention concerns also the perfuming or flavoring compositions or articles containing said compounds. Compositions comprising 6-isopropyl-3,9-dimethyl-1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]decan-2-one and at least one further compound having or imparting minty, fruity, and/or trigeminal organoleptic properties are also part of the present invention.

The cyclic acetals of the 1,5-dioxaspiro[4,5]decane type which are substituted in the dioxane ring with 1-4 alkyl groups have organoleptic properties which make them useful as fragrance materials. The alkyl groups each have 1-4 carbon atoms with the total number of carbon atoms in all alkyl groups together not exceeding 7. Preferably the cyclic acetals should have at least one alkyl group in the 4 position. A particularly preferred cyclic acetal is 3,3-dimethyl-4-isopropyl-1,5-dioxaspiro[4,5]decane.

A perfume composition is described which is a suitable replacement in perfumery applications for the compound 2-(2,4-dimethycyclohex-3-en-1-y)-5-methyl-5-(1-methylpropyl)-1,3-dioxane, also known as karanal. The composition comprises at least one primary perfume ingredient selected from the group consisting of (1'R,3S,6'S)-1-(2',2',6'-trimethyl-1'-cyclohexyl)-3-hexanol, (1'S,3S,6'R)-1-(2',2',6'-trimethyl-1'-cyclohexyl)-3-hexanol, isomers of octahydro-2,2,5,8,8,9a-hexamethyl-4H-4a,9-methanoazuleno[5,6-d]-1,3-dioxole, isomers of 2-(tetramethyltricyclo[6.2.1.0]undec-4/5-en-5-yl)propanol and isomers of decahydro-2,6,6,7,8,8-heptamethyl indenofuran. The composition also comprises at least one secondary perfume ingredient.
