A process for highly efficiently producing various arylbis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)methanes which have a bulky aryl group or electron-attracting aryl group and which have conventionally been regarded as difficult to synthesize; a novel arylbis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)methane widely applicable as a catalyst for asymmetric synthesis, various functional materials, etc.; metal salts of these; and an excellent catalyst. An arylhalomethane is reacted with sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate. The arylmethyltrifluorocarbon yielded is reacted with t-BuLi, etc. The arylmethyltrifluorocarbon lithium salt obtained is reacted with trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride. Thus, an arylbis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)methane, e.g., pentafluorophenylbis(trifuryl)methane or {4-(pentafluorophenyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl}bis(trifuryl)methane, is obtained in high yield.

Novel and nonobvious compounds that function, alone or in combination, as nuclear hormone receptors for the stimulation and/or improvement of murine, mammalian skin. Specifically, beta-ionol analog and fatty acid analog compounds that are believed to function as RXR, RAR and/or PPAR receptor ligands to encourage skin differentiation and discourage excess skin proliferation. The present invention further relates to one or more products, consumer and otherwise, comprising the novel, nuclear hormone receptor ligands disclosed herein. The present invention additionally seeks to encompass methods of employing both the compounds of the present invention and the products incorporating the present compounds.

Exemplary first reactants are alpha , beta -unsaturated carbonyl compounds such as alpha , beta -unsaturated ketones and alpha , beta -unsaturated aldehydes. Chiral imidazolidinone salts can be used to catalyze enantioselective reactions, such that a chiral product is obtained from a chiral or achiral starting material in enantiomerically pure form.
