A hydraulic brake system with electronic anti-lock control contains, as essential components, a pedal actuated brake pressure transducer (1), electrically actuated inlet and outlet valves (EV1 to EV4, AV1 to AV4), wheel sensors (S1 to S4) and an electronic control circuit (6). The brake pressure transducer (1) is equipped with one or more path sensors (5), for the direct or indirect determination of the pedal path (S). Interdependent with the current driving conditions, the brake situation and the pedal path (S), the anti-lock control is switched from a standard control mode into a safety control mode, which essentially permits only a brake pressure increase in the front wheels and a brake pressure decrease in the rear wheels during an anti-lock control procedure. A limit value (SpGrenz) of the pedal advancement is determined interdependent with the driving conditions and the brake situation, and upon exceeding such a switch over takes place into the safety control mode.

A method of operation of an electronically controllable brake actuation system for anti-lock automotive vehicle brake systems employs a brake system which includes a master brake cylinder operable by an actuating pedal, braking pressure generators which are electromechanically operable by an electronic control unit. The braking pressure generators are directly connected to wheel brakes of a vehicle and are connectable to the master brake cylinder by way of hydraulic connections closable by valves that are electromagnetically operable by the electronic control unit. The system also includes at least one sensor device for identification of the driver wish for deceleration, and at least one simulator chamber interacting with the master brake cylinder. On commencement of a braking operation, a signal representative of the position of the master brake cylinder piston and a signal representative of the actuating speed occurring on the actuating pedal are produced. A length of the time delay, after which the valves are closed upon commencement of the braking operation, is determined by the electronic control unit responsive to at least one of the signals.

To increase the reliability of operation of the brake unit by making possible the buildup of hydraulic pressure in the friction brakes associated with the driven axle in the case of a failure of the electronic controller or of the entire electric system of the vehicle, the pressure transducer is arranged as a two-circuit main brake cylinder, to the first pressure space of which the friction brakes acting on the nondriven axle, and to the second pressure space of which the friction brakes acting on the driven axle are connected, wherein the connection between the second pressure space and the friction brakes acting on the driven axle is by at least one shut-off valve, which can be switched over electrically and is open in the currentless state.

Each of the braking pressure generators has a piston slidable in a cylinder bore from an initial position, each piston separating a first working chamber, to which each one wheel brake of the vehicle is connected directly and the master cylinder is connected by way of a closable hydraulic connection, from a second working chamber and is connected to the master cylinder where the stepped piston is operable to achieve a braking pressure generation or boosting. In one embodiment, first and second electromagnetically operable separating valves are inserted in the connection between the first working chamber and the master brake cylinder, the connection between the master brake cylinder and the second working chamber being effected exclusively by way of the second separating valve, and the initial position of the stepped piston permits a return stroke in opposition to its actuating direction. In another embodiment, no connection exists between the first working chamber and the master brake cylinder. The second working chamber is connected to the master brake cylinder by way of a closable hydraulic connection, and the stepped piston is operable only so as to achieve a braking pressure generation. The closable connection is achieved via an electromagnetically operable valve interposed between the second working chamber and the master brake cylinder, and the connection is open in the valve's first switch position and, in the valve's second switch position, the master brake cylinder is isolated from the second working chamber and a connection is established between the first and the second working chamber. The initial position of the stepped piston permits a return stroke in opposition to its actuating direction.
