A manufacturing method for providing a low-friction surface comprises providing (210) of a mechanical element. A tool is mechanically rubbed (212) against a surface of the mechanical element. A process liquid is provided (214) to a contact area between the mechanical element and the tool. The process liquid comprises a first element that is a refractory metal and a second element that is a chalcogen. The first and second elements are provided in a liquid substance. The mechanical rubbing is performed with a contact pressure that is between 1% and 100% of an ultimate strength of the mechanical element. The mechanical rubbing thereby causes a combined burnishing of the surface of the mechanical element and a deposition of a tribofilm on the surface of the mechanical element. The tribofilm comprises the first element and the second element.

Certain preferred embodiments of the present invention relate to compositions for the production of sintered molded parts, components/parts produced therefrom, and methods for preparing such compositions. In accordance with certain embodiments, compositions for production of sintered molded parts comprise a metal-based, a ceramic-based, and/or a polymer-based powder, and a compaction aid, having 25 to 60 weight percent of a polyglycol, based on the total weight of the compaction aid, and 40 to 75 weight percent of a montan wax, based on the total weight of the compaction aid. The compaction aid may be present in an amount from about 0.1 to 5 weight percent, preferably 0.5 to 1.5 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition. The composition may also include a lubricant such as, for example, MoS2, WS2, BN, MnS, and/or carbon.

Sulfurized phosphorous compounds, which are effective anti-wear, extreme pressure agents, may be formed without odor by reacting phosphorous compounds with other reactive sulfur sources, including elemental sulfur, before addition of polysulfides. The process of the present invention yields a lubricant additive package which is odor free or very low odor, thermally stable, and which contains polysulfides. Particularly useful embodiments of this invention include low odor gear lubricant additive packages.

A machining oil composition comprises at least two ingredients, that is a lubricating base oil and a salt selected from sulfonates of alkali metals and the like. The composition may further comprise a metal composition selected from thiophosphates and the like, and/or sulfur-based extreme pressure agents. Since no chlorine-based extreme pressure agent is contained, little problem on the environmental pollution or the damage of incinerators is involved. The composition exhibits good machining or cutting performance.

A lubricating oil composition for a high-speed gear particularly having a peripheral speed of 10 m/sec or more is herein disclosed which is obtained by blending a base oil having a % C.sub.A of 5 or less and preferably further having a nitrogen content of 50 ppm or less and a sulfur content of 50 ppm or less with a sulfur additive, a phosphorus additive and a nitrogen additive so that an element ratio 100N/(S+P) in the composition may be in the range of 4 to 10 by weight, and the lubricating oil composition has a sufficient hypoid gear performance, can inhibit the formation of a sludge, and permits the prolongation of the life of an oil seal for use in a high-speed and/or a high-temperature rotating portion.

A graphite-free lubricating oil which comprises a base oil having dispersed therein 10 to 40% by weight of a carbohydrate and/or a derivative thereof whose particle size ranges from 10 to 150 .mu.m, 2 to 20% by weight of a film-boosting agent and 0.1 to 20% by weight of a dispersant. Moreover, the lubricating oil is free of black-colored substances such as graphite. Therefore, the oil permits the improvement of working surroundings and exhibits excellent properties such as formability through forging almost comparable to or even greater than that of the commercially available graphite-in-oil type lubricating oils. The lubricating oil can be used instead of the graphite-containing lubricating oils for warm forging, hot forging, rolling, tube-manufacturing, drawing and extrusion in place of the graphite-containing lubricating oils and ensures the improvement in the working surroundings and excellent lubricity.

This invention relates to additives for oleaginous fluids containing extreme pressure and antiwear agents and containing less than 15 GC area percent higher dialkyl polysulfides and to a process for their production comprising:a) forming a first reaction mass comprising olefin, a sulfur source, and a catalyst;b) heating the first reaction mass to a temperature and for a period of time which is sufficient to form a mixture of dialkyl disulfides, dialkyl trisulfides and higher dialkyl polysulfides;c) forming a second reaction mass comprising the mixture of dialkyl disulfides, dialkyl trisulfides and higher dialkyl polysulfides formed in step (b), an organo phosphorus compound, and optionally an amine;d) heating the second reaction mass to a temperature and for a period of time which are sufficient to convert at least a portion of the higher dialkyl polysulfides to dialkyl trisulfide; ande) recovering said mixed additive containing extreme pressure agents and antiwear agents, wherein said recovered mixed additive contains less than 15 GC area percent higher dialkyl polysulfides.
