    摘要: A method of immobilizing a catalyst on a substrate surface involves providing novel ligating copolymers comprising functional groups capable of binding to a substrate surface and functional groups capable of ligating to catalysts such as metal ions, metal complexes, nanoparticles, or colloids; applying the ligating copolymer to a substrate surface to cause the ligating copolymer to bind thereto, and contacting the modified substrate surface with a solution of a catalyst, causing the catalyst to be ligated by the ligating copolymer and thus immobilized on the substrate surface. The ligating copolymer may be patterned on the substrate surface using a method such as microcontact printing. A method of selectively metallizing a substrate in a desired pattern involves using a ligating chemical agent comprising functional groups capable of binding to a substrate surface and functional groups capable of ligating to electroless plating catalysts; applying the ligating chemical agent to a substrate in a desired pattern using microcontact printing to cause the ligating chemical agent to bind thereto; contacting the modified substrate surface with a solution of an electroless plating catalyst, causing the catalyst to be ligated by the ligating chemical agent and thus bound to the surface; and metallizing the catalyzed regions of the substrate surface using electroless plating.

    摘要: A photosensitive monolayer is self-assembled on an oxide surface. The chemical compound of the photosensitive monolayer has three components. A first end group provides covalent bonds with the oxide surface for self assembly on the oxide surface. A photosensitive group that dissociates upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation is linked to the first end group. A second end group linked to the photosensitive group provides hydrophobicity. Upon exposure to the ultraviolet radiation, the dissociated photosensitive group is cleaved and forms a hydrophilic derivative in the exposed region, rendering the exposed region hydrophilic. Carbon nanotubes or nanocrystals applied in an aqueous dispersion are selectively attracted to the hydrophilic exposed region to from electrostatic bonding with the hydrophilic surface of the cleaved photosensitive group.

    摘要: A semiconductor nanowire is coated with a chemical coating layer that comprises a functional material which modulates the quantity of free charge carriers within the semiconductor nanowire. The outer surface of the chemical coating layer includes a chemical group that facilitates bonding with molecules to be detected through electrostatic forces. The bonding between the chemical coating layer and the molecules alters the electrical charge distribution in the chemical coating layer, which alters the amount of the free charge carriers and the conductivity in the semiconductor nanowire. The coated semiconductor nanowire may be employed as a chemical sensor for the type of chemicals that bonds with the functional material in the chemical coating layer. Detection of such chemicals may indicate pH of a solution, a vapor pressure of a reactive material in gas phase, and/or a concentration of a molecule in a solution.

    摘要: The invention is directed to a radiation sensitive compound comprising a surface binding group proximate to one end of the compound for attachment to a substrate, and a metal binding group proximate to an opposite end of the compound. The metal binding group is not radiation sensitive. The radiation sensitive compound also includes a body portion disposed between the surface binding group and the metal binding group, and a radiation sensitive group positioned in the body portion or adjacent to the metal binding group. The surface binding group is capable of attaching to a substrate selected from a metal, a metal oxide, or a semiconductor material.

    摘要: A photosensitive monolayer is self-assembled on an oxide surface. The chemical compound of the photosensitive monolayer has three components.
