    摘要: A three-dimensional complex preform is made formed of various types of reinforcement fiberglass fibers with a binder at the interstices which rigidize the preform to the shape and form approximating the molded article, which can be handled and stored until a final mold is made filling the interstices with plastic and curing the plastic. Complex preforms require either specific reinforcements in the form of increased sections, specific reinforcement, or require modification or enlargement in size or increase in complexity by the attachment of one or more additional preforms. To modify an existing preform and obtain a desired shape and form, reinforcement members or additional preforms are attached by energetic stitching. Energetic stitching includes the application of an electromagnetic energy curable binder and the application of electromagnetic radiation to cure the binder. The stitching normally occurs over a restricted area defined by the contact surfaces to join two or more members and the restricted area is obtained in various forms such as by applying binders in preselect areas, or by applying the curing radiation in preselect areas or by masking the application of the binder or masking the application of the energy by controlling of the location and/or areas where the stitching is applied. Substantial modifications and flexibility in the type of resultant preform can be attained whether the preform has an add on reinforcement member or is formed by the attachment of one or more additional preforms to it to obtain a complex resultant preform.

The apparatus includes an impregnation chamber having an elongate impregnation passageway with an entrance end and an exit end, means for supplying a polymer material to said impregnation chamber, and means for advancing continuous filament fibers into and through said impregnation chamber, entering through said entrance end and exiting through said exit end, so that the polymer material is immersed in said polymer material. Shear inducing means is mounted in said impregnation chamber and cooperates with said fibers for imparting shear to the polymer material as it contacts the advancing fibers to enhance the wetting and impregnation of the fibers by the polymer material.

    摘要: A method for impregnating a flat, fibrous substrate penetrated by a low viscosity, fluid synthetic resin, the substrate web 1 being preheated by known device 2 and thereupon being made to pass over a friction roller 3 which is heated where called for and which is uniformly wetted at its surface 6 with the low viscosity, aqueous synthetic resin solution based on an aminoplastic resin, substantially a melamine resin 5 or based on a phenolformaldehyde resin 5' present in a bath, the low viscosity, aqueous synthetic resin solution being uniformly heated and at least part of it penetrating the surface of the substrate web 1, whereupon the substrate web 1 loaded with synthetic resin is fully impregnated in the bath 4. Next this substrate web soaked with synthetic resin is made to pass through a metering device 7 and a drying channel 8 wherein the solvents of the aqueous, synthetic resin solution absorbed by the substrate are extensively evaporated in a flow of hot air and thereupon this substrate is cut to size in cutting device 9 into flat pieces 10 and is stacked in stacking device 11. The composites 10 are suitable to manufacture decorative cover layers, industrial insulating materials and core-layers of decorative molded laminates.

    摘要: An improved flexible towpreg tape of a known geometry and a method of production therefor. The improved flexible towpreg tape is formed from a plurality of reinforcing filaments fusion coated with matrix forming material, the reinforcing filaments being substantially wet-out by the matrix forming material, and the towpreg tape having multiple plies with an average thickness less than about 100 microns. The method of production for the improved flexible towpreg tape includes the steps of coating the reinforcing filaments with the matrix forming material in a manner causing interfacial adhesion of the matrix forming material to the reinforcing filaments; forming a towpreg by heating the matrix forming material contacting the reinforcing filaments until the matrix forming material liquefies and coats the reinforcing filaments; and forming the towpreg tape under pressure and elevated temperature in a means for creating a known tape geometry.

    摘要: A reinforced, impervious, unitary film and a method for making the same are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a film is produced from a layer of weft inserted warp knit scrim and at least one layer of lightweight, porous mat, together being impregnated with a suitable thermoformable plastic in liquid form such as PVC plastisol, then being set and calendered under pressure to deform the plastic and create a continuous, non-porous, unitary film. The resulting product is highly resistant to water absorption and hydrostatic pressure and essentially non-wicking.

The apparatus further includes a groove forming roll for forming a plurality of longitudinal grooves in one surface of a second rubber sheet, and a forming roll arranged spaced from the pressure-joining roll to form a second pressure-joining position between the forming roll and the pressure-joining roll. When the first and second rubber sheet are supplied into the second pressure-joining position, they are pressure-joined with each other, while at the same time halves of the cords projecting from the first rubber sheet into the longitudinal grooves of the second rubber sheet to form a rubber sheet having the cords therein.

    摘要: Glass fiber mats are made for subsequent use in preforming for an RTM or SRIM molding process, for example, such that the binder applied to the mat has two distinct curing stages. In the first stage, a partial cure is provided by visible light upon a free radical generation in response to a photoinitiator mixed in the binder in an exact ratio to give a predictable increase in viscosity to that of a semi-solid so that the fibers are sufficiently bound for subsequent handling, but not sufficient to complete a cure, while leaving a second stage ready for a final cure which is achieved by the use of a cationic-type second photoinitiator which is sensitive to ultraviolet light. During the second curing stage, the mat is formed into a three-dimensional shape of a desired end product and cured with ultraviolet radiation while still in the mold, to obtain a rigid three-dimensional preform structure.
