Abstract:
A method is provided for obtaining crosslinked polymers having pendent sulfonic acid groups by crosslinking through the sulfonic acid groups or their precursors with aromatic crosslinkers or aromatic pendent crosslinking groups to form aromatic sulfones. Such crosslinked polymers may be used to make polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM's) that may be used in electrolytic cells such as fuel cells.

Disclosed are various fluoropolymer blend combinations and multilayer articles comprising a blend in a first layer and a second layer comprising a polymer bonded to the first layer. The invention also provides an article comprising a first layer comprising a blend of two or more fluoropolymers, and a second layer bonded to the first layer, the second layer comprising a partially-fluorinated thermoplastic polymer, a perfluorinated thermoplastic polymer, or a combination thereof. The invention also provides an article comprising a first layer comprising a blend of two or more fluoropolymers, at least one of which comprises a partially-fluorinated thermoplastic polymer, and optionally at least one perhalogenated polymer, and a second layer bonded to the first layer, the second layer comprising an at least partially-fluorinated thermoplastic polymer. The invention also provides processes for preparing blended fluoropolymers and multilayer articles comprising a fluoropolymer layer.
Abstract:
Methods are provided to make acid functional fluoropolymers by: a) dehydrofluorinating a starting fluoropolymer with a dehydrofluorinating agent to form an unsaturated fluoropolymer; b) adding an acidifiable nucleophilic functionalizing agent to a double bond of the unsaturated fluoropolymer; and c) acidifying the added acidifiable function. Acid functional fluoropolymers and ion conducting membranes thereof are also provided, including acid functional fluoropolymer having pendent groups according to the formula: —X—Ar—An, wherein X is selected from O, S or NR, where R is selected from H and C1-C30 alkyl or aryl, which are optionally substituted, wherein Ar is a C6-C30 aromatic group, which is optionally substituted, wherein A is an acidic function or salt thereof, wherein a can be independently chosen to be 1, 2 or 3.
Abstract:
A multi-layer structure includes a fluoropolymer bonded to a substrate. The structure is prepared by heating a bonding composition to form the bond. The bonding composition includes an amino-substituted organosilane. The bonding composition includes non-adhesive materials.
Abstract:
A method for making a fine electrically conductive grid embedded in a polymer substrate. The method includes the steps of providing a polymer substrate, forming a pattern of grooves in the substrate, filling the grooves with electrically conductive powder, and then applying heat and/or pressure to the substrate. The application of heat and/or pressure to the substrate causes the grooves to collapse inward against the conductive powder. Collapsing the grooves compacts the conductive powder within the groove, thereby establishing a continuously conductive grid line or circuit. The narrow grid lines that result allow more light to transmit through the substrate. The method allows grid lines to be made with higher aspect ratios (ratio of line depth to line width) than is possible by previous methods.
Abstract:
The invention relates to compositions useful for bonding fluoropolymer to substantially non-fluorinated polymer. The compositions of the invention comprise a substantially non-fluorinated polymer or a mixture of said polymers, a di- or polyamine, preferably, an aliphatic diamine, and an onium catalyst, preferably, a phosphonium salt.
Abstract:
This invention provides a method of bonding substantially non-fluorinated polymeric material to dissimilar polymers, particularly fluoropolymer materials, utilizing a bonding composition comprising substantially non-fluorinated polymeric material comprising a blend of carboxyl, anhydride, imide, or oxycarboxy functional polyolefin with a suitable organic or inorganic base and an organo-onium compound that is stable in the presence of the base. Multi-layer articles and composite constructions, including retroreflective sheeting, fuel line hoses, and adhesive articles made of a fluoropolymer layer and a substantially non-fluorinated layer are also provided.
Abstract:
This invention provides curable fluoroelastomer compositions comprising: (a) a fluorine-containing polymer or blend of fluorine-containing polymers each comprising interpolymerized units derived from one or more fluorine-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomers; (b) at least one organo-onium compound such as those selected from the group consisting of ammonium, arsonium, phosphonium, stibonium, amino-phosphonium, phosphorane (e.g. triarylphosphorane), iminium, and sulfonium compounds; and (c) one or more aryl, allyl or alkyl carbonate-blocked compounds as crosslinking agents. Methods of curing fluoroelastomer compositions, and articles made therefrom are also described.
