Abstract:
A Listeria bacterium is disclosed which comprises a first mutation in the multidrug resistance transporter M (MdrM) gene which causes a decrease in interferon-β production in macrophages as compared to wild-type Listeria bacterium and a second mutation in the multidrug resistance transporter T (MdrT) gene which causes a decrease in interferon-β production in macrophages as compared to the wild-type Listeria bacterium.
Abstract:
A method of treating a disease selected from the group consisting of emphysema, sepsis, septic shock, ischemic injury, cerebral ischemia, a neurodegenerative disorder, meningitis, encephalitis, hemorrhage, cerebral ischemia, heart ischemia and a cognitive deficit in a subject in need thereof is provided. The method comprising administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of a combination of at least two agents, wherein a first of said two agents upregulates an activity and/or expression of Nrf2 and a second of said two agents is a glutamatergic modulator, thereby treating the disease.
Abstract:
Methods and kits for diagnosing schizophrenia are disclosed. The diagnostic method comprises analyzing in a biological sample of a subject a level of A-to-I RNA editing of at least one CNS-expressed gene as set forth in Table 1, wherein an amount of the A-to-I RNA editing of the at least one gene below a predetermined level is indicative of schizophrenia in the subject.
Abstract:
In a method of analysis, a target image is registered to define a plurality of keypoints arranged in sets corresponding to polygons or linear segments in the target image. A database of registered and annotated images is accessed and a polygon-wise comparison between the target image and each database image is employed. The comparison is used for projecting annotated locations from the database images into the target image.
Abstract:
A method of estimating a position of an object is disclosed. The method comprises receiving a plurality of signals transmitted between each of a respective plurality of reference stations of a known position and the object. The method further comprises, for each received signal: processing the signal using a matrix featuring a characteristic power delay profile and a characteristic signal waveform to provide a processed signal, and calculating a direct estimate of the position of the object based, at least in part, on the processed signals.
Abstract:
Provided are methods of determining a presence or level of soluble mortalin in a body fluid of a subject, and predicting prognosis of a subject diagnosed with cancer (e.g., solid tumor) by determining the presence or level of soluble mortalin in a body fluid of the subject. Also provided are kits for determining presence and/or level of soluble mortalin in a body fluid of the subject and/or predicting prognosis of a subject diagnosed with cancer, comprising at least two distinct antibodies to mortalin directed against different epitopes of said mortalin.
Abstract:
The invention relates to compounds for reducing or inhibiting a biological function mediated by LIMK1 or LIMK2, wherein the compounds are selected to bind the ATP-binding site and/or the substrate-binding site of LIMK.
Abstract:
A modulator device for converting digital date into modulation of an optical signal includes an electronic input for receiving an input data word of N bits and an electrically controllable modulator for modulating the intensity of an optical signal, the modulator including M actuating electrodes where M≧N. An electrode actuating device, most preferably a digital-to-digital converter, operates actuating electrodes so that at least one electrode is actuated as a function of values of more than one bit of the input data word. According to an alternative, or supplementary, aspect of the invention, the set of electrodes includes at least one electrode having an effective area which is not interrelated to others of the set by factors of two. In one-preferred implementation, a Mach-Zehnder modulator also provides phase modulation to give QAM functionality. Another implementation employs a semiconductor laser.
Abstract:
A method of fabricating a nanoshell is disclosed. The method comprises coating a nanometric core made of a first material by a second material, to form a core-shell nanostructure and applying non-chemical treatment to the core-shell nanostructure so as to at least partially remove the nanometric core, thereby fabricating a nanoshell. The disclosed nanoshell can be used in the fabrication of transistors, optical devices (such as CCD and CMOS sensors), memory devices and energy storage devices.
