Abstract:
A passive wireless sensor includes a substrate having at least one Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) piezoelectric resonator thereon. The MEMS piezoelectric resonator includes a piezoelectric layer between a top metal or semiconductor layer (top electrode layer) and a bottom metal or semiconductor layer (bottom electrode layer). The top electrode layer is a patterned top electrode layer including at least a first electrode for sensing an electrical signal and a second electrode for providing a ground reference. An antenna is connected to the first and/or second electrode for wirelessly transmitting the electrical signal and for receiving a wireless interrogation signal.
Abstract:
A system is for monitoring a sterile field associated with a medical procedure. The system may include a sensor being adjacent an area where the medical procedure is to be performed. The sensor is configured to monitor at least the area, a patient for the medical procedure, and a medical technician for the medical procedure. The system may include a processor coupled to the sensor and configured to detect a sterile field event, and an associated location for the sterile field event, and an output device coupled to the processor and configured to generate an alert indicator when the sterile field event is detected, the alert indicator also including the associated location.
Abstract:
The invention provides a nutrient medium composition and associated methods for lengthening the useful life of a culture of muscle cells. Disclosed is a method of culturing mammalian muscle cells, including preparing one or more carriers coated with a covalently bonded monolayer of trimethoxy-silylpropyl-diethylenetriamine (DETA); verifying DETA monolayer formation by one or more associated optical parameters; suspending isolated fetal rat skeletal muscle cells in serum-free medium according to medium composition 1; plating the suspended cells onto the prepared carriers at a predetermined density; leaving the carriers undisturbed for cells to adhere to the DETA monolayer; covering the carriers with a mixture of medium 1 and medium 2; and incubating. A cell nutrient medium composition includes Neurobasal, an antibiotic-antimycotic composition, cholesterol, human TNF-alpha, PDGF BB, vasoactive intestinal peptides, insulin-like growth factor 1, NAP, r-Apolipoprotein E2, purified mouse Laminin, beta amyloid, human tenascin-C protein, rr-Sonic hedgehog Shh N-terminal, and rr-Agrin C terminal.
Abstract:
A method for preparing a light sensitive particle that uses at least one metal precursor material and at least one dopant precursor material mixed in solution absent a surfactant. Upon an optional adjustment of pH to about 3 to about 6, a light-sensitive particle comprising a metal-dopant material may be formed and separated from the solution. The light-sensitive particle may comprise a Q-dot particle. Also described are the particles themselves.
Abstract:
A method for forming neuromuscular junctions includes forming functional neuromuscular junctions between motoneurons and muscle cells by co-culturing one or more human motoneurons and one or more human muscle cells in a substantially serum-free medium. A synthetic mammalian neuromuscular junction includes a human motoneuron functionally linked to a human muscle cell in a substantially serum-free medium. An artificial substrate may be used to support the one or more neuromuscular junctions.
Abstract:
An Automatic Pulse Tracer Velocimeter (APTV) including arc-type APTVs and cross-type APTVs along with a field station and a master station capable of wireless communication with a remote computing devices. The APTV measures flow velocity in a flowable medium by injecting a small amount of a conductive tracer solution into a water column. Following injection, a plurality of wire detector pairs positioned downstream of the injection point are programmed to continuously make conductivity measurements at pre-determined time intervals. A tracer curve of the conductivity measurements over time is created and used to obtain velocity measurements.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are devices comprising one or more cantilevers comprising one or more neuromuscular junctions formed by a co-culture of myotubes and motoneurons. Disclosed herein are methods of using the disclosed devices comprising one or more cantilevers. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present invention.
Abstract:
Backlit video display systems where the backlights (for example, LED backlights) are controlled based at least in part on the content of the video signal of the video that is being displayed by the backlit video display system. The system can provide specific control of the three primary colors (for example, red, green and blue LEDs). The system can provide content-based control in a spatial mode. The system is a smart backlighting system with content-based controls at the following levels: (i) spectral, (ii) spatial, and (iii) temporal control. Also, some embodiments may provide a novel way of providing a backlit video display system with night vision (NV) capability through a unique four LED chip architecture.

Abstract:
The inventive concepts disclosed and/or claimed herein relate generally to catalysts and, more particularly, but not by way of limitation, to a heterogeneous, metal-free hydrogenation catalyst containing frustrated Lewis pairs. In one non-limiting embodiment, the heterogeneous, metal-free catalyst comprises hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) having frustrated Lewis pairs therein.
