The fluids to be studied are placed in a chamber (13) of variable volume delimited by a piston (5) that can be moved by hydraulic device (24) in a cavity of a body (1). An endoscope (18) allowing to view the inside of the chamber and notably to see the orifices of two diametrically opposite pipes (14, 15) that communicate the cell with the outside is placed behind a transparent porthole (8) closing the end of the chamber opposite the piston. The body (1) can swivel about a pin (26), which allows achievement of equilibrium and also to draw off a particular phase of a stratified multiphase fluid by placing the orifice of one of pipes (14, 15) within this phase. A pressure detector (19) is included in the wall of the piston so as to decrease practically any dead volume likely to distort the measurements. A single body can contain two cells placed side by side, at least one having a transparent wall. The device can be used for studying fluids, notably petroleum fluids.

A novel organophilic clay comprising the reaction product of: (a) a smectite-type clay; and (b) a quaternary ammonium compound or compounds selected from the group consisting of: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an unsaturated alkyl-ester group having 8 to 30 carbon atoms as described below and R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of (i) R.sub.1, (ii) long chain linear or branched alkyl (including methyl), aliphatic or aromatic groups having 1 to 30 carbon atoms (such groups can also include hydroxylated groups); (iii) aralkyl groups, which are benzyl and substituted benzyl moieties, including such groups having fused ring moieties having linear chains or branches of 1 to 30 carbon atoms; (iv) aryl groups such as phenyl and substituted phenyl including fused ring aromatic substituents; (v) beta, gamma unsaturated groups having six or less carbon atoms or hydroxyalkyl groups having 2 to 6 carbon atoms; and (vi) hydrogen and M.sup.- is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, methylsulfate, acetate, iodide and bromide. The organophilic clay is used in a non-aqueous fluid system such as paints, inks, and coatings to provide improved rheological properties.

Fluids kept under high pressure in one or several balancing cells (C1, C2) inside a thermostat-controlled enclosure (14) at about 200.degree. C. are extracted by introducing into the enclosure a sampling cell (1) capable of withstanding pressures of the order of 150 MPa, fastening cell (1) to a connection element (24) linked to balancing cells, taking samples and removing the cell from the thermostat-controlled enclosure, with all of these operations being easily conducted from outside. After possible weighing of the sampling cell, a transfer device thereafter allows the sampling cell to be communicated with measuring and analysis devices such as a gasometer associated with a separating bottle, a solvent injection means, etc. Operations are synchronized by a programmed microcomputer (MC). The preferred application is processing geological samples.

A polymeric peroxide comprising a dilvalent recurring unit having the formula: ##STR1## wherein the recurring unit of Formula I has a 10 hour half-life temperature of at least 80.degree. C. and optionally a divalent recurring unit having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.5, X, X.sup.1, Y, Z, y and z are as defined in the Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiments and the polymeric peroxide has a molecular weight of 1,000 to 200,000. The polymeric peroxides are derived from hydroxy-hydroperoxides of dihydroxy dialkyl peroxides. These polymeric peroxides can be used for preparing block copolymers and compatibilizing polymer blends and alloys.
