Abstract: Described herein are glass, ceramic, or glass-ceramic articles having improved antimicrobial efficacy. Further described are methods of making and using the improved articles. The improved articles generally include a glass, ceramic, or glass-ceramic substrate, a compressive stress layer that extends inward from a surface of the glass, ceramic, or glass-ceramic substrate to a first depth therein, and an antimicrobial agent-containing region that extends inward from the surface of the glass, ceramic, or glass-ceramic substrate to a second depth therein.

Abstract: An article and method of manufacturing an article is provided. The article includes a glass, glass-ceramic, or ceramic substrate having a primary surface with an anti-reflective coating disposed over the primary surface. An intermediate coating containing a cured polysilazane or a cured silsesquioxane material is disposed over the anti-reflective coating. An easy-to-clean (ETC) coating containing a polymer and/or fluorinated material is disposed directly on the intermediate coating. The method of manufacturing the article includes curing an intermediate coating solution containing a polysilazane or a silsesquioxane to form an intermediate coating at a temperature of about 300° C. or less.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a glass article comprises: (A) forming a first layer of catalyst metal on a glass substrate; (B) heating the glass substrate; (C) forming a second layer of an alloy of a first metal and a second metal on the first layer; (D) heating the glass substrate, thereby forming a glass article comprising: (i) the glass substrate; (ii) an oxide of the first metal covalently bonded thereto; and (iii) a metallic region bonded to the oxide, the metallic region comprising the catalyst, first, and second metals. In embodiments, the method further comprises (E) forming a third layer of a primary metal on the metallic region; and (F) heating the glass article thereby forming the glass article comprising: (i) the oxide of the first metal covalently bonded the glass substrate; and (ii) a new metallic region bonded to the oxide comprising the catalyst, first, second, and primary metals.

Abstract: An ultraviolet light-resistant article that includes: a substrate having a glass or glass-ceramic composition and first and second primary surfaces; an ultraviolet light-absorbing element having a an absorptivity greater than 50% at wavelengths from about 100 nm to about 380 nm and a thickness between about 10 nm and about 100 nm; and a dielectric stack formed with a plasma-enhanced process. Further, the light-absorbing element is between the substrate and the dielectric stack. Alternatively, the light-absorbing element can include one or more ultraviolet light-resistant layers disposed within the dielectric stack over the first primary surface.

The modification layers bond the sheet and carrier together such that a permanent bond is prevented at high temperature processing as well as maintaining a sufficient bond to prevent delamination during high temperature processing.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are delamination resistant glass pharmaceutical containers which may include an aluminosilicate glass having a Class HGA 1 hydrolytic resistance when tested according to ISO 720-1985 testing standard. The glass containers may also have a compressive stress layer with a depth of layer of greater than 25 μm. A surface compressive stress of the glass containers may be greater than or equal to 350 MPa. The delamination resistant glass pharmaceutical containers may be ion exchange strengthened and the ion exchange strengthening may include treating the delamination resistant glass pharmaceutical container in a molten salt bath for a time less than or equal to 5 hours at a temperature less than or equal to 450° C.

Abstract: An article that includes: a substrate having a glass, glass-ceramic or a ceramic composition and comprising a primary surface; and a protective film disposed on the primary surface. The protective film comprises a thickness of greater than 1.5 microns and a maximum hardness of greater than 15 GPa at a depth of 500 nanometers, as measured on the film disposed on the substrate. Further, the protective film comprises a metal oxynitride that is graded such that an oxygen concentration in the film varies by 1.3 or more atomic %. In addition, the substrate comprises an elastic modulus less than an elastic modulus of the film.

Abstract: One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including a film disposed on a glass substrate, which may be strengthened, where the interface between the film and the glass substrate is modified, such that the article has an improved average flexural strength, and the film retains key functional properties for its application. Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. In one or more embodiments, the interface exhibits an effective adhesion energy of about less than about 4 J/m2. In some embodiments, the interface is modified by the inclusion of a crack mitigating layer containing an inorganic material between the glass substrate and the film.
