摘要: A light having a plurality of LEDs and a switching substrate is disclosed. The switching substrate is coupled to LEDs and includes a plurality of switches that provide a plurality of configurations for the LEDs. Each configuration is characterized by a two-dimensional array of LEDs having a minimum bias potential and a maximum bias potential, the LED array generating light when a bias potential is provided between the power terminals that is greater than the minimum bias potential, at least two configurations being operable to provide light at bias potential within this range. The switching substrate is sub-dividable into a plurality of identical multi-LED light sources by dividing the switching substrate along predetermined lines. The array of LEDs can be organized as a nested array of LEDs. The switches can be implemented as passive switches that are set by removing portions of conductors or bridging gaps in conductors.

摘要: A memory constructed from a plurality of capacitor elements organized into a two-dimensional array having a plurality of rows and columns. Each capacitor element includes a bottom electrode, a top electrode, and a dielectric layer disposed between the top and bottom electrodes, all of the bottom electrodes in each column being connected together to form a column electrode and all of the top electrodes in each row being connected together to form a row electrode. The memory is read by generating an electrical signal on one of the row electrodes while connecting the remaining row electrodes to a reference potential and sensing the current generated in one of the column electrodes. The capacitance of the capacitor elements corresponds to data values stored in the memory. Different capacitor values may be constructed by altering the area of the top electrodes or altering the dielectric constant of the dielectric layer between the corresponding top and bottom electrodes. The area of the top electrodes may be set to a first value during fabrication and then altered after fabrication of the basic structure. In this manner, a write-once-read-many (WORM) memory may be implemented.

摘要: A light source and method for making the same are disclosed. The light source includes a plurality of surface mount LEDs that are bonded to a mounting substrate by a layer of asymmetric conductor. Each LED has surface mount contacts on a first surface thereof and emits light from a second surface thereof that is opposite the first surface. The mounting substrate includes a top surface having a plurality of connection traces. Each connection trace includes an n-trace positioned to underlie a corresponding one of the n-contacts and a p-trace positioned to underlie a corresponding one of the p-contacts, the p-trace having an area greater than the p-contact. The layer of asymmetric conductor is sandwiched between the surface mount contacts and the connection traces, and can optionally extend into the spaces between the LEDs to provide a scattering medium for redirecting light leaving the sides of the LEDs.

摘要: A light source that is adapted to replace existing fluorescent tubes in an existing fluorescent light fixture is disclosed. The light source includes a plurality of LEDs mounted on a heat-dissipating structure, first and second plug adapters that mate with the florescent tube connectors of the fluorescent tube the light source is to replace, and a power adapter that converts power from a fluorescent tube ballast presented on the first and second plug adapters to DC power that powers the LEDs. The light source is powered from the output of the existing fluorescent ballast. The light source can utilize the existing metallic enclosure as a heat-radiating surface and/or direct air heat transfer from the surface of the heat-dissipating structure.

摘要: A protective covering constructed from an electrostatically charged sheet having a top and bottom surface and an absorbent layer. The absorbent layer has top and bottom surfaces, the bottom surface of the absorbent layer being bonded to the top surface of the electrostatically charged sheet. The absorbent layer is divided into a plurality of cells for containing liquid spilled on the absorbent layer. The absorbent layer can be constructed from paper, open cell foam, fibrous mat, or any other absorbent material. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the cells are constructed by providing hydrophobic barriers in the absorbent layer. The barriers can be constructed from paraffin, plastic, or any other material that can penetrate the absorbent layer. In one embodiment of the present invention, a hydrophobic layer is bonded to the top surface of the absorbent layer. The hydrophobic layer has a plurality of pores that allow liquid spilled on the hydrophobic layer to penetrate the hydrophobic layer and be absorbed by the absorbent layer.

摘要: A component coil for constructing transformers and the transformer constructed therefrom are disclosed. The component coil includes a substrate having an insulating layer of material having top and bottom surfaces. First and second traces are included on the top and bottom surfaces. Each trace includes a spiral conductor. The inner ends of the spiral conductors are connected by a conductor that passes through the insulating layer. The first and second spiral conductors are oriented such that magnetic fields generated by the first and second spiral conductors have components perpendicular to the top surface and in the same direction. The component coils can be used to construct a power transformer or a galvanic isolator.

摘要: A method for detecting the presence of target molecules bound to a working electrode in a first location. The first location is coated with a detection solution containing labeling molecules that include a first charge-separation moiety attached to a first molecule that binds to the target molecule. The first charge-separation moiety includes a material that generates hole-electron pairs in response to being illuminated by light in a first band of wavelengths. After removing any unbound labeling, the working electrode is immersed in a solution containing a compound that is oxidized by the generated holes. The first location is then selectively illuminated with light in the first band; and the change in the current and/or potential is measured between the working electrode and a reference electrode in contact with the solution. The first charge-separation moiety is preferably constructed from particles of a semiconducting material such as TiO2.
