Provided herein include methods and compositions pertaining to coatings, such as paints, for covering a substrate. In some aspects and embodiments the coatings may include a heat reflective metal oxide pigment that, applied to an external surface of a building (or is applied on a substrate used for an external surface of a building such as an architectural metal panel, EIFS, as a stucco top coat or as a top coat for roofing tiles) reduces the energy consumption in the building. In other aspects and embodiments, provided are textured coatings having a texturing material; for example, methods and compositions are provided pertaining to textured coatings that can be applied robotically or in an automated fashion. In various aspects and embodiments, textured coatings are provided that include a texturing material and a heat reflective metal oxide pigment. In some aspects and embodiments heat reflective coatings for concrete or clay tiles and methods of applying such are provided.

The doped rare earth disilicate includes a disilicate having a composition of RE2Si2O7. Micro- or nano-particles are treated with a hydrophobic agent and an additive to form larger microstructure with the hydrophobic agent and the additive bonded thereto forming a low stain and low mist adhesion coating material. A low stain and low mist adhesion coating formed from the material has a contact angle of at least 130°. In addition, the low stain and low mist adhesion coating has less than 60% mist adhesion area.

New methods of forming color-coated gemstones are provided. These methods broadly comprise subjecting a source of metal (e.g., an organometallic compound) to a vapor deposition process so as to form the metal source into a vapor that is subsequently deposited onto the surface of a previously heated gemstone. The vapor is also diffused into the gemstone so as to form a mixed zone of gemstone having the metal source dispersed or intermixed therein. The coated gemstone is then subjected to heat treatment to alter the valence state of the metal in the coating until the desired colored coating is obtained, resulting in coatings having superior adhesion and optical properties.

Acid mine drainage sludge is used as a source of a precursor compound that reacts with a source of anion to form a chloride-sequestering compound. The precursor compound may have the formula 2Me′(II)O·(Y(2−x),Y′x)O3+qMe′(II)O, where at least one of Y and Y′ is present; Y and Y′ are different and are independently selected from the group consisting of Al, Fe, Cr, and not present; Me′ is a cation and is selected from the group consisting of Ca, Ba, Sr, Mn, and Zn; x is a number ranging from 0 to 2; and q is a number ranging from 0 to 2; and combinations thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the precursor compound has the formula 2CaO(Fe(2−x),Alx)O3+CaO.

A method of fabricating a process chamber component that has a ceramic form with grains and grain boundary regions. In the method, the component is bead blasted to provide a surface having a relatively low roughness average of less than about 150 microinches. The component is dipped into a solution having a concentration that is sufficiently low to reduce etching of grain boundary regions of the ceramic form. A metal coating is formed over at least a portion of the ceramic form. The component fabricated by this method can tolerate thicker deposits of sputtered material in a sputtering process without the sputtered deposit accumulates causing spalling of the coating of the component.

Embodiments provide methods for the protection and consolidation of calcareous materials. An exemplary method includes providing an aqueous solution of a hydroxycarboxylic acid, adjusting the pH of the aqueous solution by adding an alkaline agent, and applying the pH-adjusted aqueous solution to a calcareous mineral to form a conversion layer on the mineral. The calcareous mineral may, for example, be carbonate rock, particularly limestone and marble, or may be part of masonry material, aggregates, or fillers. Adherent conversion layers are readily formed at ambient temperatures and, therefore, methods provided are suitable for field application. Conversion layers so formed are provided as further embodiments.

The present invention is directed to a method of forming germanium-containing silicones in which germanium is incorporated into the siloxane backbone with Ge—O—Si bond or onto a carboxylated siloxane in a form such as the germanium ester form, which has a COOGe bond. The germanium mole content ranges from 1 mol % to 50 mol %. The groups attached to silicon and/or germanium include alkyl, alkenyl, and carboxyalkyl and their derivatives. In the materials with pendant carboxylic acid groups, the protons can be replaced by metal ions such as an alkali, alkaline earth, transition metal, or rare earth metal ions. The materials can be crossinked, with the crosslinking being initiated by ultraviolet light or other means with or without a photoinitiator. The present invention is also directed to a method of forming a germanium-containing silicate film on a substrate such as silicon or other material wafer through thermal oxidation or other oxidation methods such as those utilized in planar waveguide applications.

An aqueous ruthenium chloride solution for blackening ceramic surfaces includes ruthenium chloride; water present in an amount effective to provide an aqueous solution of ruthenium chloride; and a buffer which is selected from the group consisting of sodium acetate, sodium propionate, potassium acetate, potassium propionate, and mixtures thereof, and which is present in an amount effective to provide the aqueous solution with a pH of at least 1.5. A method for dyeing a ceramic surface includes applying the aqueous solution of ruthenium chloride to a ceramic surface by at least one of spraying, dipping, painting and printing to provide a treated surface; drying and firing the treated surface at a temperature ranging from about 300 to about 1400.degree. C. for a period of time ranging from one half hour to five hours; and grinding and polishing the treated surface to even out the treated surface.
