A slip rate of the driven wheel is calculated (at step S1). When the slip rate is smaller and when the slip rate is larger (at steps S2 and S3), estimated road surface friction coefficients MUTG and MUFG are determined by searching a table, based on a total grip force TGS or a longitudinal grip force FG determined from a vehicle acceleration (at steps S4, S7, S5 and S9). The larger one of the estimated road surface friction coefficients MUTG and MUFG is selected as MUCON (at steps S10, S11 and S12). A minimum total grip force TGMIN determined by searching a table and based on MUCON is compared with the total grip force TGS determined from the vehicle acceleration (at step S13), and the larger one of the minimum total grip force TGMIN and total grip force TGS is delivered as a total grip force TG for traction control (at steps S14 and S15). Thus, it is possible to estimate a correct total grip force, taking the road surface friction coefficient into consideration.

The speed of a hardware-software debugger is markedly increased through the use of high speed simulators which ignore all systems operations except those where design errors are expected to manifest themselves, by skipping CPU bus cycles of no interest for the simulation, by not explicitly simulating periodic clock signals and generating only schedules of clock signals, and by caching instructions when alien computers are used in the simulation process to eliminate decoding of the instructions of the target computer.
Abstract:
Electrochemical devices comprise at least a pair of electrodes and a lithium ion conductive electrolyte provided between the pair of electrodes. At least one of the electrodes comprises a lithium nitride-metal compound having a one-dimensional chain structure. By this, the number of end groups which greatly take part in characteristic degradation of the device can be reduced significantly, ensuring good characteristic properties. The devices include lithium secondary cells, electric double-layer capacitors, and electrochemical display devices.

According to the present invention, a function can be added to a peripheral apparatus by making a change in only a few parts of a data processing system without making changes regarding hardware in, especially, a system unit nor an interface part between the system unit and the peripheral apparatus. A predetermined control signal, said signal being a signal for causing a peripheral apparatus such as a floppy disk drive to perform a first predetermined operation, is provided to said peripheral apparatus in a predetermined condition in order to cause said peripheral apparatus to perform a second predetermined operation which is different from said first predetermined condition.

A traction control system for a vehicle includes a calculator for calculating a speed of a driven wheel of the vehicle, a calculator for calculating a vehicle speed and a calculator for calculating a slip rate of the driven wheel on the basis of the driven wheel speed and the vehicle speed, such that the feed-back control of a throttle valve is carried out to reduce the output torque from an engine to inhibit the excessive slipping of the driven wheel, when the slip rate exceeds a predetermined threshold value. The system further includes a calculator for calculating a total grip force of the vehicle, a calculator for calculating an initial engine required torque at the start of the feed-back control of the throttle valve on the basis of the total grip force, and a calculator for calculating an initial throttle opening degree of the throttle valve on the basis of the initial engine required torque. Thus, the excessive slipping of the driven wheels can be reduced without an abrupt change exerted to the behavior of the vehicle by setting an appropriate initial throttle opening degree.

A hydrogen storage alloy for negative electrodes in an alkaline storage battery is disclosed. The alloy is represented by the general formula MmNi.sub.x M.sub.y, wherein Mm is a misch metal or a mixture of rare earth elements, and M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Co, Cu, Fe, Cr, Zr, Ti and V and wherein 5.0.gtoreq.x +y.gtoreq.5.5, and has a microstructure comprising a phase composed of a crystal structure of CaCu.sub.5 type and is capable of absorbing and desorbing hydrogen in a reversible manner, and at least one phase consisting mainly of an element or elements other than Mm, and incapable of storing hydrogen.

A wheel speed detecting device for a vehicle having wheel speed detectors for detecting left and right wheel speeds, respectively; a turning state detector for detecting the turning state of the vehicle; and a correcting and calculating device for correcting the wheel speeds on the basis of an output from the turning state detector and for calculating a value representative of the left and right wheel speeds on the basis of the corrected wheel speeds. Thus, an error of wheel speeds detected during turning of the vehicle can be compensated for, thereby determining a correct wheel speed.

An apparatus for controlling a DC motor connected to an intake throttle valve in an internal combustion engine to detect an actual opening degree of the intake throttle valve and to match the actual opening degree with a command opening degree. The apparatus includes a feedback loop for defining a feedback signal indicative of a command to converge the actual opening degree of the control member to the command opening degree by reception of the command opening degree delivered by a command opening degree generating means and the actual opening degree delivered by an actual opening degree detecting means, a combined-signal generating means for combining the feedback signal defined by the feedback loop with the command opening degree delivered by the command opening degree generating means, and a motor driving means for driving the DC motor in response to an output from the combined-signal generating means. Thus, it is possible to converge the actual opening degree of the intake throttle valve to the command opening degree with a good responsiveness and a good positioning accuracy.

A semiconductor light emitting device which allows part of an active layer to generate light by supplying current to the part of the active layer is disclosed. The semiconductor light emitting device includes: a semiconductor substrate having upper and lower surfaces, the upper surface having a stepped portion, the stepped portion dividing the upper surface into at least a first area and a second area; a current confining layer, formed on the upper surface of the substrate, the current confining layer being discontinuous at the stepped portion, the current flowing through an area between the first area and the second area of the substrate; a multilayer structure formed on the current confining layer, the multilayer structure including the active layer; a first electrode which covers only part of an upper surface of the multilayer structure; and a second electrode formed over the lower surface of the substrate. In the semiconductor light emitting device, the light generated from part of the active layer is extracted to the outside through a portion of the upper surface of the multilayer structure which is not covered with the first electrode.
