Abstract:
A stable emulsion polymer is prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a vinyl monomer component in the presence of a base neutralized copolymer having a peak molecular weight not exceeding 50,000 of an olefinically unsaturated material selected from the group consisting of 1-decene, 1-dodecene, undecenylic acid and mixtures thereof and an ethylenically unsaturated anhydride containing material. The emulsion polymer is particularly useful for preparing coating compositions which have excellent physical properties.
Abstract:
Polymeric-containing compositions having improved oxidative stability have the polymer and at least two stabilizing agents. These agents are selected from low temperature antioxidants such as alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hypo or hydrogen phosphites, high temperature antioxidants such as: alkali metal or alkaline earth metal phenylphosphonates, thioethers like dialkyl thioalkylionate and polymers thereof and metal deactivating agents like polydentate ligands and ethylene diamine-tetracidic acid compounds. The composition can be a coating composition for substrates including those like fibrous material including fibers, bundles of fibers, strands, roving, flakes and beads. The composition can be present as a dried residue on the substrate. For fibrous substrates, the composition also has at least one organofunctional silane coupling agent, may also have processing aids such as epoxy polyester polymers and/or lubricants. In addition, the polymeric-containing composition can have a crosslinking agent in an effective amount to produce a dried residue of limited swellability from the composition.
Abstract:
A titanium oxide-coated chromatic-color metal flake pigment is prepared by hydrolyzing an organic titanate ester compound, e.g., tetraisopropoxy titanium, in the presence of the base metal flakes suspended in an organic medium having a pH of 4 to 8. The pigment exhibits iridescent color tones of great aesthetic value delicately varying depending on the thickness of the titanium oxide coating layer. The pigment has high chemical stability, for example, against acids, by virtue of the very uniform and dense coating layer of titanium oxide so that the inventive pigment is useful as a coloring agent in a water-borne composition. Application fields of the inventive pigment include colored coating compositions, ink compositions, cosmetic preparations, molding compounds of plastic resins and so on.
Abstract:
Improved stable, fluid, aqueous dispersion compositions comprise a pigment, an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of a linear aliphatic substituted glycine such as a salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid or nitrilo triacetic acid as a stabilizing agent, and water. The dispersion composition may additionally contain a lower alkanol such as methanol and/or a water soluble plasticizer such as propylene glycol. Coating compositions for use as a film coating for tablets and the like contain the above-described stable, fluid, aqueous dispersion composition, a water soluble plasticizer, a film coating resin, and water. The described fluid, aqueous dispersion compositions have been found to remain stable for extended periods exceeding six months.

Abstract:
The invention pertains to a colorless ketimine or an adduct thereof displaying excellent color stability and usable as a cross-linking agent in a curable coating, impregnating, sealing or bonding composition wherein the ketimine is the adduct of a polyamine having a primary and a secondary amino group and containing at least 3 carbon atoms in a linear chain between both amino groups, and a ketone containing not more than 8 carbon atoms and having methylene groups adjacent to the carbonyl group. The invention also pertains to a process for preparing the ketimine and to the use of the ketimine in a curable composition.
Abstract:
Coating composition suitable for treating a surface so as to provide water-erodible coating thereon, which composition comprises at least one erodible polymer comprising one or more hydrolysable groups selected from sulphonate esters and sulphonate esters which in an aqueous environment will generate by hydrolysis corresponding polymer-bound acid groups. The erodible polymers are described in detail and a method of treating surfaces using the composition is described.

Abstract:
This application discloses dimethyl ether propelled water based aerosol compositions. Classes of aqueous thickeners are described herein which are suitable for use in aqueous aerosol coating compositions. The thickeners lose their thickening capability in the presence of dimethyl ether which is the aerosol propellant employed, and thus allows a low enough temporary viscosity to afford suitable flow and breakup when dispensed in spray form from an aerosol dispenser. On evaporation of the dimethyl ether during the spraying process, enough of the dimethyl ether is lost to allow the thickener to regain its thickening capability. High gloss, thick film, aerosol paints can thus be achieved.
