Abstract:
An electron device employing an electron source including a polycrystalline diamond film having a surface with a plurality of crystallographic planes some of which exhibit a very low/negative electron affinity such as, for example, the 111 crystallographic plane of type II-B diamond. Electron devices employing such electron sources are described including image generation electron devices, light source electron devices, and information signal amplifier electron devices.

A method of making bonding bumps on the pads of an electrical chip including depositing a layer of metallic adhesion material over the surface, depositing metallic bumps on the metallic adhesion material over each of the pad areas using a focused liquid metal ion source, and chemically etching the layer of metallic adhesion material off the surface outside of the deposited bumps.

A field emission electron emitter employing a coating of diamond material disposed on a surface of a layer of conductive/semiconductive material is constructed by a method including the steps of implanting carbon ions at a surface of a selectively shaped substrate to function as nucleation sites for the diamond formation. A conductive layer is deposited over the diamond and the substrate is removed to leave an electron emitter with a diamond coating.
Abstract:
A method of fabricating a double-tapered scanning tunneling microscope comprises (a) immersing one end of the tip in a bath of an acidic aqueous etchant solution containing an alkaline earth salt, with the wire positioned substantially perpendicularly to the surface of the solution; and (b) etching the wire at about 25 volts root mean squared (rms) alternating current (ac) until a double-tapered tip is formed thereon. The etching step is preferably followed by a polishing step which comprises (c) providing a thin film of a second acidic aqueous etchant solution containing an alkaline earth salt; then (d) contacting said electrode tip to the thin film: and then (e) etching the tip at about 2 volts rms ac to thereby polish the tip.Also disclosed is a method inhibiting the formation of carbon on a scanning tunneling microscope tip which comprises (a) positioning a wire in an etchant solution and then (b) etching the wire while excluding carbon dioxide therefrom.Double-tapered scanning tunneling microscope tip comprised of an elongate wire and methods of using the same are also disclosed.

A field emission cathode affording multiple emitting points, formed by a tiplicity of carbon fibers mounted on a conductive base, preferably in spaced clusters of about one thousand or more fibers, and projecting from the base to afford a multiplicity of emission points at the fiber tips. The fibers are in a range of diameters of about two to ten microns. As applied to an electron impact ion source for an instrument such as a mass spectrometer or molecular beam detector, the cathode is of annular configuration, incorporated in an electrode assembly comprising, radially inwardly of the assembly, the cathode, an extraction grid, a retardation grid and an ionization cage.
