    摘要: A method and apparatus for coating a fastener, particularly a fastener with a head portion and shank portion, with a coating material is provided. The invention includes the steps of and apparatus for supporting the fasteners such that the fasteners are positioned for coating. The fasteners are conveyed such that the fasteners are moved through a plurality of operating stations and pass through a heating station where the shank portions of the fasteners are heated. Subsequently, at a material applying station, a coating material is applied to the heated shank portions. A preferred embodiment of the method and apparatus of the present invention includes supporting the fasteners on their head portions with the shank portions projecting upward, conveying the fasteners with their shank portions projecting upward for processing, heating the shank portion to a temperature above the melting point of the applied material and applying the material to the heated shank portion to form a coating thereon.

    摘要: The present invention is directed to a process for the application of fluoropolymer to a preselected area of a threaded fastener, and particularly to substantially all of the threads of the fastener. The fluoropolymer is supplied to a spray nozzle in powder form and is subjected to a triboelectrostatic charging process so that individual particles discharged from the spray nozzle are electrically charged. In the preferred form of the invention, the fluoropolymer powder is triboelectrically charged, entrained in an air stream discharged from the nozzle and directed onto the preselected area of the fastener. In this manner a generally uniform powder coating is deposited onto the preselected area of the fastener while the fastener is maintained at room temperature. Thereafter, the fastener is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the fluoropolymer to thereby coalesce the deposited powder into a continuous film coating which adheres, upon cooling, to the pre-selected area of the fastener. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the fastener is heated in a manner which raises the temperature of only the preselected area of the fastener to the fluoropolymer melting point. This preferred heating technique minimizes the retention of fluoropolymer inadvertently deposited on areas of the fastener other than the preselected area, and allows this undesired fluoropolymer to be easily removed, even after heating.

    摘要: A powder spray apparatus for coating threaded fasteners capable of operating at an optimum spray condition. Air supply and powder supply tubes communicate within an air/powder entrainment block. The jet diameter of the air supply tube is sized to provide an optimum spray condition at which a constant supply of powder is provided through a powder spray tube at an optimum powder density and velocity. These powder density and velocity conditions maximize the powder build rate on the threads of the fastener, and also increase production rates. The resulting coated fasteners exhibit a low torque scatter, and a highly uniform patch. A method for operating a powder spray apparatus at the optimum spray condition also forms part of the present invention.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for coating a fastener with head and shank portions is disclosed. The invention includes the steps of and apparatus for transferring the fasteners from a feed mechanism such that the fasteners are positioned for coating. The fasteners are then conveyed through a plurality of operating stations, beginning with a heating station where the shank portions of the fasteners are heated. Subsequently, at a material applying station, a coating material is applied to the heated shank portions. A preferred embodiment of the method and apparatus of the present invention includes using a magnetic holder to carry the fasteners horizontally by their head portions, where fasteners are centered by a rotating wheel, heating the shank portion to a temperature above the melting point of the applied material and applying the material to the heated shank portion to form a coating thereon. The magnetic holders are part of an endless traveling belt that rotates continually. The fastener carriers have teeth that engage a rack to rotate the fasteners. A conveyor provides added air cooling for the coated fasteners, which can continue to be rotated. Also disclosed is a transfer wheel with two sets of notches that is synchronously coupled to the traveling belt for placing and aligning fasteners on the belt for coating. Uncoated areas on the fasteners may be detected via sensors present beyond the powder spray station which may include a plurality of spray nozzles.
