The present invention is directed to ultrafiltration membranes comprising a microporous material, said microporous material comprising: (a) a polyolefin matrix present in an amount of at least 2 percent by weight, (b) finely divided, particulate, substantially water-insoluble silica filler distributed throughout said matrix, said filler constituting from about 10 percent to about 90 percent by weight of said microporous material substrate; and (c) at least 35 percent by volume of a network of interconnecting pores communicating throughout the microporous material. The present invention is also directed to methods of separating suspended or dissolved materials from a fluid stream such as a liquid or gaseous stream, comprising passing the fluid stream through the ultrafiltration membrane described above.

An aqueous coating composition is provided which includes crosslinkable film-forming resin and about 0.01 to about 25 weight percent on a basis of total resin solids of an amphiphilic adjuvant having an acid value of less than 30, a water-soluble polar end including at least one terminal hydroxyl group and a water-insoluble hydrocarbon end including at least seven contiguous carbon atoms. The coating composition is useful as a monocoat or primer, basecoat or clearcoat in a multi-component composite coating composition for automotive applications.

Disclosed are compositions comprised of (a)a polymer containing pendant and/or functional groups selected from the group consisting of carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups; and (b) a rheology modifier comprising the reaction product of an amine and an isocyanate; and, optionally, a polymer which is different from the polymer (a) which contains carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional groups. Also disclosed are curable compositions comprised of the compositions described above which further comprise (c) a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the functional groups of the polymer (a). The curable compositions are useful for a variety of applications such as adhesives, sealants and surface coatings where the presence of a carbamate, urethane and/or amide functional polymer in conjunction with the rheology modifier provides improved thixotropy and superior sag resistance.

A film-forming composition is provided comprising: (i) an amide functional polymer, copolymer or oligomer selected from (a) acrylic polymers, (b) polyesters, (c) polyurethanes, (d) polyethers or (e) mixtures thereof; and (ii) an aminoplast crosslinking agent containing methylol and/or methylol ether groups. The acrylic polymers have a plurality of groups of at least one of the structures: ##STR1## wherein n is 0 or 1, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.2 is a divalent linking group having about 1 to 30 carbon atoms when the group is of the first structure, or R.sub.2 is alkylene having about 2 to 13 carbon atoms when the group is of structure II, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The (b), (c), and (d) polymers each have a plurality of terminal amide groups. The film-forming composition prior to curing has a theoretical hydroxyl value less than about 50 based on total resin solid weight of the film-forming composition, excluding any hydroxyl functionality associated with N-methylol groups. After curing, the film-forming composition exhibits a high level of acid etch resistance. The film forming composition can also be the clear film-forming composition with a base coat in a multi-component composite coating composition.

A waterborne coating composition having a crosslinking agent and a dispersion of polymeric microparticles in an aqueous medium wherein the microparticles are prepared by first forming a mixture in the aqueous medium of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and a substantially hydrophobic, saturated fatty acid-containing polyester. The amount of fatty acid used to prepare the polyester ranges from about 20 to 80 weight percent of the total weight of the fatty acid-containing polyester. The fatty acid-containing polyester contains functional groups which are capable of reacting with the crosslinking agent. The mixture is particularized into microparticles by high stress techniques, followed by polymerization of polymerizable species within the microparticles to produce the polymeric microparticles. The amount of the fatty acid-containing polyester in the dispersion is at least 10 and up to 70 weight percent based on weight of the ethylenically unsaturated monomers and fatty acid-containing polyester. The amount of the polymeric microparticles in the coating composition is from 20 to 80 weight percent based on total weight of resin solids in the coating composition.
