Reactive geocomposite mats, and their method of manufacture, for treating contaminants in soil or water that allow the passage of essentially non-contaminated water therethrough. The geocomposite mat includes a pre-formed woven or non-woven geotextile, having a thickness of about 6 mm to about 200 mm, and having, a porosity sufficient to receive a powdered or granular contaminant-reactive material, contaminant-sorptive material, or a contaminant-neutralizing material (hereinafter collectively referred to as “contaminant-reactant material” or “contaminant-reactive material”) throughout its thickness, or in any portion of the thickness across its entire major surface(s). The powdered or granular contaminant-reactive material is disposed within the pores of the previously formed, high loft geotextile mat to surround the fibers, e.g., by vacuum or vibrating the high loft mat while in contact with the contaminant-reactive material to allow the powdered or granular contaminant-reactive material to flow by gravity into the pores of the previously formed geotextile and vibrational forces. Liquid-permeable cover sheets are adhered to the upper and lower major surfaces of the filled geotextile to prevent the powdered or granular material from escaping from the geotextile during transportation and installation.

A fluid filter assembly for filtering fluids such as blood is described. The assembly includes first and second filter housing elements formed by an injection molding process. Each element is flexible and includes a peripheral flange formed thereabout and a fluid communicating port formed therein. Filter media, such as a filter membrane, is sealed between the mating flanges of two elements. The fluid filter assembly is capable of collapsing and expanding during the filtration process depending upon the composition of the fluid passed there through. A method for making the filter assembly and systems for using the filter assembly are also disclosed.

Oleophobic and hydrophobic filters for filter venting applications are made by forming a polydimethylsiloxane coating on the surface of a filtration substrate. The filters have high water penetration pressures and high air permeabilities. The coatings are formed by polymerizing vinyl terminated siloxane with a crosslinker such as hydrosilicone in the presence of a catalyst. Alternatively, the coatings can be formed by heat curing after exposing the substrate to methyl silicone and crosslinking at high temperature.

The filter provides optimum distribution of fluid over the filtering medium, a reduced pressure drop and an increased filter life, without a reduction in filter rating. The diffusion medium has a first plane of spaced-apart, substantially parallel strands defining first longitudinal passages having a first height dimension and a first width dimension, and a second plane of spaced-apart, substantially parallel strands defining second longitudinal passages having a second height dimension and a second width dimension. The strands of the second plane of the diffusion medium are oriented in a non-parallel manner with respect to the strands of the first plane, such that the first and the second planes define lateral openings having side dimensions. The first and the second longitudinal passages include at least one dimension that is smaller than any of the side dimensions of the lateral openings. At least a portion of the layers of filter medium have bypass apertures, wherein such portion defines at least one pre-qualifying filter medium layer.

A fine powder of polytetrafluoroethylene is mixed with a liquid lubricant, and the mixture is molded into an unsintered sheet by at least one of an extrusion method and a rolling method. The liquid lubricant is removed from the sheet by at least one of a heating method and an extrusion method. This sheet-form molding is stretched in the machine direction to produce a sheet-form polytetrafluoroethylene molding which, upon analysis with a differential scanning calorimeter, gives a crystal fusion curve having an endothermic peak in the temperature range of 345.+-.5.degree. C. and which has a degree of crystallization of from 0.1 to 0.85 and a specific gravity of 1.4 or lower. The molding is then stretched in the transverse direction to produce a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. The process is effective in producing, with good reproducibility, a useful porous PTFE membrane which has a high collection efficiency and a low pressure loss and is reduced in the leakage of coarse particles.

Fibrous structures containing immobilized particulate matter and processes for making them are disclosed. These structures may be used for filters and for fabrics including chemical defense garments and others. The fibrous structures have webs containing composite fibers having a lower melting component and a higher melting component. The particles are distributed into the interior of the web and fused to the low melting component of the individual fibers without substantially reducing the available surface area of the particle. A fibrous structure of a composite staple having a nylon sheath and a polyester core, with activated carbon particles bonded to the sheath is specifically disclosed. The processes for producing such a fibrous structure include carding a web of staple fibers and distributing particulate matter therein, air laying a web of staple fibers and particulate from a suspension thereof between two wet formed layers of staple fibers. One or more additional layers of nonwoven, woven, or knit webs or fabrics may be bonded thereto.
