The invention relates to a method for producing a casing of a larger length for foodstuffs, particularly for sausages. Said casing is comprised of a number of casing sections, which contain collagens, while using a mandrel onto which a first casing section is slid followed by a second casing section, whereby the facing end areas of both casing sections overlap on the mandrel thus resulting in the formation of an overlapping area of casing sections on which heat and pressure are temporarily applied to at least partially weld the casing sections to one another in the overlapping area. The overlapping area is positioned on a deformable expanding body, which is placed inside the casing sections and whose diameter can be enlarged from an initial diameter up to a final diameter. The expanding body is enlarged form its initial diameter to its final diameter before or during the welding process whereby resulting in enlarging the diameter of the overlapping area as well. The expanding body is permitted to return it its initial diameter upon completion of welding process.

A mold assembly has an upper positioning seat, an upper panel disposed in the upper positioning seat, a lower positioning seat, a lower panel disposed in the lower positioning seat, a first air cylinder disposed on a side of the lower positioning seat, a second air cylinder disposed on a bottom of the lower positioning seat, a third air cylinder disposed on a side of the upper positioning seat, and a fourth air cylinder disposed on a top portion of the upper positioning seat. A lower plate is disposed on a bottom of the upper panel. An upper plate is disposed on the lower panel. The lower plate engages with the upper plate.

The processing time and energy efficiency of metal or composite bonding operations is improved by heating the lay-up preform of the structure in an induction heating press where energy goes primarily to heating the workpieces rather than to heating the tooling or being lost to the environment. The bonding process is especially beneficial for joining thermoplastic composites, but it also can be used with metals or thermosets. Preferential heating at the bondline is achieved by using shims to define the bondline and to define bead regions that have relief from contact with the susceptor envelope because of the thickness of the shims in the bondline regions.

An apparatus for thermally attaching includes a thermally conductive support body (36; 86) with an edge surface (38; 88), a heater cartridge (42), a pneumatically expandable elastomeric element (44-54; 92-102), pinch plates (64, 66; 112, 114) for holding the elastomeric element in place, and passages (60, 62; 108, 110) for pressurizing the heated elastomeric element into contact with an element (24, 26) to be thermally attached to a mounting surface (85).

If internal support is required to keep thermoplastic parts from sagging during thermoplastic welding, silicone rubber bladder inflated to fill the space between the prefabricated composite parts, such as wingskins and spaced spars, provides positive reaction pressure. To protect the bladder we cover the sharp edges at the interface of the parts with foam or silicone rubber pads.

A die for use in an induction heating workcell incorporates segments of the induction coil in spaced array within a cast ceramic or phenolic body. A peripheral compression frame, typically of phenolic, surrounds the die body and applies a compressive load to the body through lateral and transverse reinforcing rods that are cast into the body. Matched dies close to trap heat in a workpiece at the center of the induction coil.

For forming or consolidating organic matrix composites, for example, an organic matrix composite panel is sealed in a "retort" between sheets of a susceptor material that is susceptible to induction heating. The susceptor sheets are heated inductively. The sheets in turn conduct heat to the organic matrix composite panel. When heated to the desired temperature, the composite panel is consolidated and/or formed. In the present invention, the susceptor sheets are selected so that their magnetic permeability decreases to unity at approximately the desired operating temperature thereby limiting heating to this "Curie temperature" and providing substantial uniformity of temperature in the panel. Of course, the concept applies to other induction heating operations for metals including SPF, brazing, annealing, heat treating, bonding, hot pressing, and the like.

A method and apparatus for forming and consolidating organic matrix composites. An organic matrix composite panel comprising laid-up prepregs is placed between sheets of a susceptor material that is susceptible to inductive heating to form a workpiece. The resulting workpiece is placed within upper and lower dies formed of a material that is not susceptible to inductive heating. An induction coil embedded within the dies is energized and inductively heats the susceptor sheets surrounding the panel. The sheets in turn conductively heat the organic matrix composite panel. A pressure zone between the workpiece and one of the dies is pressurized to form the workpiece to the contour of a forming surface on one of the dies. The pressure in the pressure zone is maintained on the workpiece until the organic matrix composite panel is fully consolidated and formed.

A hand-holdable, portable welding apparatus for smoothly joining the lumens of sections of thermoplastic tubing systems, including those that may be located in a cramped work site. The integrity of the lumens is maintained when the tubes are being welded by use of a selectively rigidizable, non-elastomeric mandrel of PTFE or PFA having a predetermined maximum size dimensioned to the ID of the lumens being joined. The welding unit employs a resiliently mounted coaxial heater block in conjunction with arcuate radiator inserts that are centered about the tubes to be welded regardless of the diameter of the tubes. Spring-loaded dogs grab the periphery of the tubes as they are inserted into the welding unit and prevent them from moving apart when heat is applied.
