Abstract: A process is provided for recovering oil from a hydrocarbon-bearing formation comprised of hydrocarbons and formation water. The process presented herein includes an oil recovery formulation comprising at least 75 mol % dimethyl sulfide and between 1 mol % and 18 mol % of dimethyl ether, wherein the amount of dimethyl ether in the oil recovery formulation is selected relative to the solubility of dimethyl ether in the formation water.

Abstract: Separation of a product of digestion of cellulosic biomass solids may be challenging due to the various components contained therein. Methods and systems for processing cellulosic biomass, particularly a reaction product of a hydrothermal reaction containing lignin-derived products, such as phenolics, comprise providing the reaction product to a separation zone comprising a liquid-liquid extraction unit. The liquid-liquid extraction unit can provide an aqueous portion and a non-aqueous portion, where these portions can be separated into various fractions individually. For example, desirable compounds in the aqueous portion and non-aqueous portion can be recovered from the portions individually and optionally combined to be further processed into a fuels product. Heavier components in the aqueous portion and non-aqueous portion can be recovered from the portions individually and used in the process, such as phenolics that can be used as a digestion solvent.

Abstract: A tester, systems and method for testing hydrocarbons are provided. The tester includes a test module supporting the component thereabout. The test module is operatively connectable to a fluid source to receive the hydrocarbon therefrom. A recirculation circuit is operatively connectable to the fluid circuit about the test module to recirculate the hydrocarbon thereabout whereby the hydrocarbon is passed over at least a portion of the component. The method involves passing the hydrocarbon over at least a portion of a plurality of the components, recirculating the hydrocarbon over the portion of each of the components, and performing a material test on each of the components.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for coupling ends of two insulated conductors includes coupling a core of a first insulated conductor to a core of a second insulated conductor. Exposed portions of the cores are located inside a box. Electrically insulating powder material is placed into the box and a force is applied to first and second plungers to compact the powder material. Additional electrically insulating powder material may placed into the box and a subsequent force applied to compact the powder material into compacted powder material that surrounds the exposed portions of the cores. The compacted powder material is formed into a substantially cylindrical shape. A sleeve is placed over the compacted powder material and coupled to the jackets of the insulated conductors.
