Abstract:
The present invention provides methods and kits a) for predicting colorectal cancer patient survival, as well as the survival of patients harboring other invasive cancers where cellular proliferation and carcinogenesis is linked, in part, to high levels of ODC activity and increased cellular polyamine contents, and b) for selecting the corresponding treatment options for such patients based on the allelic nucleotide sequence or SNP at position +316 of the ODC1 promoter gene as well as cancer treatment methods, in each case, which include the determination of the ODC1 promoter +316 position genotype, as a means to guide treatment selection.
Abstract:
Porous electrodes in which the porosity has a low tortuosity are generally provided. In some embodiments, the porous electrodes can be designed to be filled with electrolyte and used in batteries, and can include low tortuosity in the primary direction of ion transport during charge and discharge of the battery. In some embodiments, the electrodes can have a high volume fraction of electrode active material (i.e., low porosity). The attributes outlined above can allow the electrodes to be fabricated with a higher energy density, higher capacity per unit area of electrode (mAh/cm2), and greater thickness than comparable electrodes while still providing high utilization of the active material in the battery during use. Accordingly, the electrodes can be used to produce batteries with high energy densities, high power, or both compared to batteries using electrodes of conventional design with relatively highly tortuous pores.
Abstract:
This disclosure describes, in one aspect, a composition for intracellular delivery of a polypeptide. Generally, the composition includes a substrate that has a surface, a cleavable linker affixed to at least a portion of the surface, and a cargo polypeptide bound to the cleavable linker. In some embodiments, the cargo polypeptide can further include a targeting peptide. In another aspect, this disclosure describes a method for intracellular delivery of a polypeptide. Generally, the method includes administering to a subject any embodiments of the composition summarized above, and cleaving the cleavable linker, thereby releasing the cargo polypeptide from the substrate.
Abstract:
A face mask that may be used for bag-mask ventilation, during the induction of general anesthesia for example, and allows for two-handed or ambidextrous use. The face mask includes a dome connected to a deformable rim, which forms an enclosed air space when the rim is pressed against a patient's face. The dome has a connection port and a contoured outer surface adjacent the connection port. The contoured outer surface includes contour features such as a pair of crossed composite recesses which may each receive a different one of a user's thumbs. The connection port is aligned with the patient's mouth when the mask is in use and an adapter may be included that attaches to the connection port and provides a ventilation port as well as an intubation port that is aligned with the mouth.
Abstract:
Compositions and methods for treating and/or preventing bacterial infections in animals such as bovines are provided. The compositions and methods utilize the predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus to treat and/or prevent infections such as infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) and bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Use of the bacterium obviates the need for chemotherapeutic measures.
Abstract:
The present disclosure is generally related to automatically evaluating medical patient symptoms and, more specifically, to systems and methods for providing tailored prescriptions, multi-dimensional patient matching and symptom monitoring. In particular, a medical patient completes a questionnaire, responses to the questionnaire are correlated with information obtained from a medical knowledge resource and an integrated symptoms summary is generated based on the responses to the questionnaire and the information obtained from the medical knowledge resource. A tailored prescription is provided to the patient based on the integrated symptoms summary and physician consultation (if applicable), patients are compared to other patients according to questionnaire responses so that they can connect with each other if they chose, and patients are able to monitor symptoms over time so that they can gain insight into whether treatments are working.
Abstract:
Pleckstrin homology domain binding compounds, pharmaceutical compositions including such compounds, and methods for their use are described herein.
Abstract:
Pharmaceutical compositions that bind to a predicted FK506 Binding Protein 52 (FKBP52) interaction surface on the androgen receptor hormone binding domain, otherwise known as FKBP52 Targeting Agents (FTAs) are provided. These compositions of the present invention are found to specifically recognize the FKBP52 regulatory surface on the androgen receptor and inhibit FKBP52 from functionally interacting with the androgen receptor. Compositions comprising the pharmaceutical composition, as well as methods of use, treatment and screening are also provided.
Abstract:
The present invention provides DNA-nanostructures comprising and at least one targeting moiety, wherein the at least one targeting moiety is linked to the DNA-nanostructure; and wherein the at least one targeting moiety is nicotine or a nicotine analogue. These compounds elicit an immunogenic response in individuals and are useful as vaccines for ameliorating nicotine dependence.
Abstract:
The disclosure provides zeolitic frameworks for gas separation, gas storage, catalysis and sensors. More particularly the disclosure provides zeolitic frameworks (ZIFs). The ZIF of the disclosure comprises any number of transition metals or a homogenous transition metal composition.
