In a process for preparing an alkoxylated amide of the formula (I)R.sup.1 --CO--NR.sup.2 --CHR.sup.3 --CHR.sup.4 --O--(CHR.sup.5 --CHR.sup.6 --O).sub.n --H (I)(1) glycerides of the fatty acids, specified later on, of the formula (II):R.sup.1 --COOH (II)are reached with amines of the formula (III)HNR.sup.2 R.sup.7 (III)to give amides of the formula (IV)R.sup.1 --CO--NR.sup.2 --R.sup.7 (IV)and glycerol,(2) then the glycerol which has been formed is separated off by adding of aqueous acid solution to the reaction mixture until it has a pH in the range 1-7, in order to bring about phase separation into a glycerol-containing aqueous phase and an organic phase containing amides of the formula (IV), and separating off the aqueous phase, and(3) subsequently the amide of the formula (IV) is reacted with ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide and/or butylene oxide to give alkoxylated amides of the formula (I).

Glycine-N,N-diacetic acid derivatives I ##STR1## where R is unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxylate groups, phenylalkyl, phenyl, a heterocyclic ring or a radical of the formula ##STR2## where A is an alkylene bridge or a chemical bond, and M is hydrogen, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium in the appropriate stoichiometric amounts, are prepared by reacting A) corresponding 2-substituted glycines or 2-substituted glycinonitriles or doubled glycines of the formula ##STR3## or doubled glycinonitriles of the formula ##STR4## or precursors of the glycine derivatives named as starting material with formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide in aqueous medium at a pH of from 0 to 11 or B) iminodiacetonitrile or iminodiacetic acid with appropriate monoaldehydes of the formula R--CHO or dialdehydes of the formula OHC--A--CHO and hydrogen cyanide in aqueous medium at a pH of from 0 to 11 and, where appropriate, subsequent hydrolysis of nitrile functionalities which are present, where the starting material used comprises unpurified raw material derived from the industrial synthesis of glycine derivatives or their precursors or of iminodiacetonitrile or iminodiacetic acid, or mother liquors produced in such syntheses.

Glycine-N, N-diacetic acid derivatives are prepared by reacting corresponding 2-substituted glycines, 2-substituted glycinonitriles, doubled glycines, or precursors of the glycine derivatives with formaldehyde and alkali metal cyanide. The reaction is conducted in an aqueous medium at a pH of 8 to 14. From 0, 5 to 30% of the amount of alkali metal cyanide required for the reaction are added to the glycine derivatives or precursors thereof Subsequently, the remaining amount of alkali metal cyanide and the formaldehyde are simultaneously metered in over a period of from 0.5 to 12 hours.

The preparation of alkyl glycosides by reaction of aqueous glycoses having a water content of 10-80% by weight with aliphatic primary alcohols having from 5 to 30 C atoms is described, in which(a) the alcohols and the glycoses are employed in a molar ratio of 2:1 to 10:1,(b) 0.1-5% by weight, based on the amount of the glycoses employed, of the acidic form of an anionic surfactant is used as the acidic catalyst having emulsifying properties,(c) 1-30% by weight, based on the amount of the glycoses employed, of alkyl glycosides is used as a further emulsifier,(d) the aqueous glycose is preheated to 50.degree.-90.degree. C. and the preheated aqueous solution of the glycose is metered with effective mixing into the reaction mixture of alcohol, acidic catalyst and emulsifier in such a manner that an emulsion is formed,(e) the reaction is carried out at from 100.degree. to 150.degree. C. and from 10 to 100 mbar, the water introduced into the reaction mixture and the water formed by the reaction being continuously removed by distillation,(f) after the reaction has ended, the acidic catalyst is neutralized by addition of a base such that the resulting mixture has a pH of 8-10, then(g) the excess alcohol is removed by distillation at from 0.01 to 10 mbar down to a residual content of less than 5% by weight, based on the amount of alkyl glycoside present, and(h) the reaction mixture is bleached at pH 8-10 after conversion into an aqueous paste having a content of from 30 to 70% by weight of alkyl glycoside using a compound eliminating active oxygen.
