A method and apparatus is provided for forming a fusion bond between two materials such as two components of a catheter. The method begins by forming a bond site by positioning a portion of a first body with respect to a portion of a second body so that a fusion bond site is formed. A laser beam is generated that has an intensity profile across its width. The laser beam is directed onto at least a portion of the first and second bodies within the bond site so that a fusion zone having an increased temperature is formed. After the laser beam is generated, the intensity profile of the laser beam that is directed onto the bond site is controllably adjusted by an optical element such as a dynamically-adjustable beam shaping element.

The invention generally relates to internal (e.g., implantable, insertable, etc.) drug delivery devices which contain the following: (a) one or more sources of one or more therapeutic agents; (b) one or more first electrodes, (c) one or more second electrodes and (d) one or more power sources for applying voltages across the first and second electrodes. The power sources may be adapted, for example, to promote electrically assisted therapeutic agent delivery within a subject, including electroporation and/or iontophoresis. In one aspect of the invention, the first and second electrodes are adapted to have tissue of a subject positioned between them upon deployment of the medical device within the subject, such that an electric field may be generated, which is directed into the tissue. Furthermore, the therapeutic agent sources are adapted to introduce the therapeutic agents into the electric field. In another aspect, the therapeutic agent sources are polymeric regions that contain one or more types of ion-conductive polymers and one or more types of charged therapeutic agents. In yet another aspect, the therapeutic agent sources are polymeric regions that contain one or more types of electrically conductive polymers and one or more types of charged therapeutic agents.

A second device connected to the channel receives the code words sent across the channel. The second device detects triple errors within a nibble of any code word and any other single error in the code word using a second ECC code, where the second ECC code is the first ECC code with columns for check bits inserted.

In blood, the device may be hardened through photopolymerization or a cooperative effect of coagulation, precipitation or ionization. The device can be made of biodegradable material impregnated with growth factors, mitogenic factors or other determinants which can improve tissue growth such that tissue ingrowth can occur over a period of time. The catheter itself may be an ultrasonic imaging catheter.
