A diesel or HHCI engine has an air intake and an exhaust for products of combustion. A pair of turbochargers receive the products of combustion in a series relationship and an exhaust aftertreatment device receive the products of combustion from the downstream turbine. A power turbine receives the output from the exhaust aftertreatment device and an EGR system of the power turbine passes a selected portion of the output to a point upstream of the upstream turbocharger compressor. A device adds fuel to the aftertreatment device to regenerate the particulate filter and the power turbine recoups the additional energy. The power turbine may be used to drive accessories or the prime output of the engine.

An apparatus and system are disclosed for enhancing aftertreatment regeneration. The system includes an internal combustion engine and an exhaust manifold directing the engine exhaust to an aftertreatment system. The system may further include an exhaust gas recycle system and a turbocharger. The system further includes a fuel injector mounted on the exhaust manifold that provides fuel to assist in regenerating an aftertreatment component. The fuel injector is mounted in an apparatus also including a flow dampener, an extender, and a residence chamber. The apparatus allows the fuel to be injected in a high temperature location where it will experience residence time at temperature, and experience shear forces passing through the turbocharger. The extender allows the fuel to be injected at a place in the exhaust manifold where recycling of injected fuel into the engine is minimized.

The secondary combustion takes place in the exducer chamber (13) of a turbine of a turbocharger (2), and generates heat for bringing a catalyst up to peak oxidation or reduction temperature, for regeneration of a catalyst, and incineration of particulates in a trap. A turbocharger system for a light or heavy duty vehicle, a maritime vehicle or a construction vehicle comprises a turbocharger device, an exhaust manifold conduit, a valve, a receptacle for compressed gas and a gas compressor for compressing gas. By opening the valve during a predetermined pulse duration time period, compressed gas may be provided from the receptacle to the exhaust manifold conduit for initial turbocharger compressor spin-up. The turbocharger system further comprises a cooling means configured to decrease temperature of compressed gas provided by the gas compressor, and a heating means configured to increase temperature of the gas pulse generated by opening of the valve. By decreasing the temperature of the compressed gas in the receptacle upstream of the valve and subsequently heating up the generated air pulse before being provided to the exhaust manifold conduit, the response time of the turbocharger device can be improved.
