A compression sidewall tire reinforced for operation while deflated. A pair of junction portions connect the sidewalls and shoulders. Each of the shoulders extends axially outward and radially inward from the tread, and each of the sidewalls extends axially outward and radially outward from the mounting portions. The sidewalls are constrained against outward expansion by the rim and junction portions. The shoulders are reinforced with a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs to resist movement toward the ground when the tire is deflated and under normal load. A circumferentially continuous rib may also be positioned on the exterior surface of each junction portion to further reinforce the tire.

A pneumatic tire for motor vehicles having a generally trapezoidal section with a top portion which is generally convex towards the outside and wider than any other part of the tire, beads, and two sidewalls. The sidewalls spread outwardly from the beads to zones which connect the sidewalls with the top portion. The top portion has a central tread portion which is normally in contact with the ground when the tire is under load, and lateral shoulders which are spaced from the ground during rectilinear running of the vehicle. The less resistant zones act as hinges under load on the tread. A generally annular reinforcing structure for the tread, which is substantially inextensible in the axial and circumferential direction, is folded at its ends about reinforcing annular straps arranged in each shoulder. A safety wheel rim for use with pneumatic tires has a removable band which is securable so as to obstruct the mouth of the well used to receive the beads of a tire when fitting the tire onto the rim. The band can thus be locked against radial expansion regardless of the position of the tire beads so that the beads cannot accidentally enter the well in the event of deflation of the tire while travelling. The well may be offset from the median plane of the rim and also spaced from the bead-retaining flanges. Examples of the securing means for the band shown are an inflation valve stem which is screw-threaded through the outer of overlapping ends of the band and which cannot be inflated unless the band is secured, and screws arranged to tighten the band circumferentially.
