    Abstract: A resettable solid state fuse that automatically restores an interrupted circuit after an overcurrent event is cleared. The resettable solid state fuse can include one or more switching devices, such as, for example, a normally-on power semiconductor, and one or more positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistive elements. The switching device is structured to extend the voltage rating of the resettable fuse, allowing the solid state resettable fuse to attain both a relatively elevated voltage rating and a relatively elevated electrical current rating while using a PTC resistive element. According to certain embodiments, the solid state resettable fuse can be tripped by a cascaded PTC resistive element, thereby providing a passive electronic device that can operate in the absence of electronic sensing, detection, and tripping, as well as without reliance on an auxiliary power supply.

    Abstract: A communication module is disclosed for Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) which can implement the EIA-485 standard, including an intelligent hardware support that can allow a known software-based collision detection function to detect collisions independently of the location of the message sources on the transmission line. The hardware support can enable both a “strong signal driving” mode as well as a “weak signal driving” mode. In the weak mode, a biasing, or attenuating, or voltage-dividing resistor can be temporarily inserted between a transmitter, or voltage source, and the transmission line.

    Abstract: A switchgear enclosure includes a first circuit breaker compartment having an opening therein defining a first air outlet. A second circuit breaker compartment is adjacent to and vertically below the first circuit breaker compartment. A first door is associated with the first circuit breaker compartment and a second door is associated with the second circuit breaker compartment, with each door having an opening therein defining a door air inlet. A main bus compartment is adjacent to at least the second circuit breaker compartment and has an opening therein defining a second air outlet. An air passage fluidly connects the second circuit breaker compartment with the main bus compartment so that air entering through the door air inlet of the second door can flow into the main bus compartment via the air passage and flow out of the second air outlet.

    Abstract: A power system grid is decomposed into several parts and decomposed state estimation steps are executed separately, on each part, using coordinated feedback regarding a boundary state. The achieved solution is the same that would be achieved with a simultaneous state estimation approach. With the disclosed approach, the state estimation problem can be distributed among decomposed estimation operations for each subsystem and a coordinating operation that yields the complete state estimate. The approach is particularly suited for estimating the state of power systems that are naturally decomposed into separate subsystems, such as separate AC and HVDC systems, and/or into separate transmission and distribution systems.

    Abstract: A power converter includes an output converter having a 3-phase or higher output, an inductor coupled to the output converter and a switch device coupled to the inductor. The switch device charges the inductor via a DC input during a first stage of a switching cycle of the switch device. The output converter discharges the inductor to a load coupled to the 3-phase or higher output during a second stage of the switching cycle. The output converter includes a phase leg for each phase of the 3-phase or higher output, each phase leg having a first thyristor device connected in series with a second thyristor device. Each phase of the 3-phase or higher output originates between the first thyristor device and the second thyristor device of the corresponding phase leg.
