Abstract:
A computer-implemented apparatus for predicting an effect of a proposed surgical strategy for treatment of epilepsy and/or epileptic seizures, configured to generate synthetic brain activity data in at least some of the nodes of a brain network model, and repeatedly: a) simulate or effect a surgical strategy comprising removal of at least one node and/or edge from said brain network and subsequently recalculate said BNI value thereof; and b) calculate a value ΔBNI representative of a magnitude of change in BNI following removal of said at least one node/edge from said brain network, so as to output multiple ΔBNI values, or data representative thereof, corresponding to respective multiple proposed surgical strategies, each comprising removal of respective nodes/edges or sets of nodes/edges from said brain network.
Abstract:
A method for use in the synthesis of graphene is described that comprises the steps of annealing a substrate in a hydrogen gas atmosphere, subsequently undertaking a deposition and nucleation step in which a relatively thick carbon layer is deposited onto the substrate and subsequently thinned to form small graphene islands or nuclei, undertaking a graphene growth step in which the graphene islands or nuclei expand and coalesce, and subsequently allowing the substrate to cool. A sensor 10 incorporating the graphene sheet is also described.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to the field of medicine. It more particularly relates to the use of compounds for preventing and/or treating dyslipidemia in a subject, said dyslipidemia typically being linked to the excess presence in the biological membranes, including in the biological membranes of non-adipocyte cells, of fatty acids, in particular of saturated long-chain fatty acids, and/or of sterols. The invention also relates to compositions, in particular pharmaceutical compositions and food supplements or complements, comprising such compounds, and to the uses thereof for preventing and/or treating dyslipidemia. The compounds and compositions according to the invention can in particular be advantageously used for preventing and/or treating a pathological condition selected from metabolic syndrome and/or a symptom or abnormality characteristic of metabolic syndrome, preferably for preventing or treating type 2 diabetes mellitus or hepatic steatosis.
Abstract:
Methods of producing a uniformly or substantially uniformly doped relatively large area multi-layered graphene element are described comprising the steps of placing the graphene element and a dopant under low pressure conditions, and holding the graphene element and dopant at an elevated temperature for a period of time whilst under the low pressure conditions. In one arrangement, openings are formed in a multi-layered graphene element of relatively large area prior to doping. In another arrangement, a relatively large area multi-layered graphene element formed by an epitaxial growth technique is used. The invention also relates to an element produced using the aforementioned techniques.
Abstract:
A compound which is a compound of formula (I) or any salt thereof: wherein R1 is a Ci-C6 alkyl group, R2 is H or a Ci-C6 alkyl group, R3 is H or a Ci-C6 alkyl group, and n is an integer from 0 to 5.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (RA), comprising: testing a sample from a subject for the presence or absence of antibodies against oxidised collagen II; wherein the presence of antibodies against oxidised collagen II in the sample is indicative of RA in the subject. The present invention also provides a method for identifying whether a subject responds to a disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) and related methods of treating RA, a method for identifying whether a subject responds to an anti-TNF biologic and related methods of treating RA, and a method of diagnosing osteoarthritis (OA).
Abstract:
The rolled photonic fibers presents two codependent, technologically exploitable features for light and color manipulation: regularity on the nanoscale that is superposed with microscale cylindrical symmetry, resulting in wavelength selective scattering of light in a wide range of directions. The bio-inspired photonic fibers combine the spectral filtering capabilities and color brilliance of a planar Bragg stack compounded with a large angular scattering range introduced by the microscale curvature, which also decreases the strong directional chromaticity variation usually associated with flat multilayer reflectors. Transparent and elastic synthetic materials equip the multilayer interference fibers with high reflectance that is dynamically tuned by longitudinal mechanical strain. A two-fold elongation of the elastic fibers results in a shift of reflection peak center wavelength of over 200 nm.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a compound comprising a mitochondrial targeting group linked to group capable of releasing hydrogen sulfide, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, for use in the treatment of the human or animal body by surgery or therapy. The invention also relates to the use of the compound in the treatment of a plant, and to certain forms of the compound.
Abstract:
There is provided a NetB epitope polypeptide comprising at least 10 contiguous amino acids from SEQ ID NO:1 and comprising a mutation in at least one position between amino acids 130 and 297 as compared with the equivalent position in SEQ ID the mutation preferably being located within a rim domain, the polypeptide being capable of binding an antibody which binds to SEQ ID NO:1 and having reduced toxicity compared with the toxicity of SEQ ID NO:1. The polypeptide is useful to vaccinate a subject against infection by Clostridium perfringens.
